Hopefully another fun thread like Phil K's Mexico-Why?
Other than the obvious - family, friends, lovers - and food for which I think there was already a thread, what are you homesick for?
My list:
- clean streets
- real, green grass in lawns and parks
- people doing what they said they would do when they said they would do it.
Not much more - I love it here.
Please add what you don't miss, too.
- the rat race
- paying 40% of my high income to taxes
- my feelings about the political state of my country (which I will spare you here) |

Being able to find the clothes I wanted in my size (I'm considered an average size in Canada but my hips are too wide for Mexican pants).
Being able to turn on the radio and listen to CBC whenever I wanted. |

Im a BBW, so buying clothes here is pretty much out of the question (although Mexico is now #2 in obesity - guess who is #1 ), but I sew. I miss patterns... Never learned to sew without them. I can alter pattern but watching real pro's just cut with their mental patterns astounds me.
NY style pizza and (real!) bagels.
Being able to mail-order stuff. (well, technically you can buuuuuuuuut)
Not worrying about having or getting change.
I miss hearing different languages around me (Im from NYC area) and different ethnic foods readily available (What do you want for dinner tonight, Vienamese, Thai, Italian......?)
Huge English-language bookstores.
Do NOT miss U.S. TV commericials, esp. the Ronco type.
Do NOT miss the cost of utilities and rent in the States.
Do NOT miss Greyhound (Mexican bus lines got them beat by long shot!)
Do NOT miss the holier-than-thou attitude of people who disagree with me politically, esp. in academia. In Mexico, all they care is that I can do my job, not whether I am PC enough. |

What do I miss?
Mostly some foods...
Good mac and cheese, Velveeta from Kraft.
Cap n Crunch cereal
Thanksgiving dinner with pumpkin pie
Seeing certain things make sense such as people keeping their word, and being able to stand up and say what you think.
I do not miss-
Bush
Republicans
Rednecks
Ghetto gangsters
"Mexican"-Americans that do not speak Spanish, have never been to Mexico except for TJ or Juarez, know nothing of Mexican history etc and yet they feel they are "experts" in all things Mexican.
People saying "Happy Mexican Independence Day!" on Cinco de Mayo
Racist and ignorant so-called Americans
People telling me all the time "If you don't like it here why don't you leave?" or my other fav "America, love it or leave it"
Don't worry, I already did. |

Yes, I know about cbc online, but I missed being able to turn on the radio at any moment and hear whatever show was on. I'm back in Canada now, so this is not an issue anymore.
I too missed the summer Canadian fruit. Peaches, plums, huckleberries, all fresh as can be. That's about all I'm eating these days! |

Really? Everytime I get a cut the hairstylist washes it first. And I've lived in Mexico most of my life. |

~walking through the mall/grocery store/park/other public place and hearing 8 different languages spoken around me at once.
~backyards with grass
~drivers who use turn signals and are observant of their fellow motorists
~metro/subway that can get you anywhere you want quickly (probably all you DF residents don't have to miss that one...)
~fashion that's 3 seasons old being sold at 3 seasons-ago prices rather than full price
~NOT having to re-attach stuff in the car with duct tape every few days thanks to all the topes
~access to international ingredients and eco-friendly items at the grocery store
Don't miss
~the weak steaks that just can't compare with what you get in MTY
~gas prices |

I've only been here almost a year (this time around), and I've had the same experiences at the beauty shop as Milenka: the beauticians always washed my hair before cutting it. I'm not sure what leslie meant by "qualified" hairstylists, but the three I've gone to all seemed to know what they were doing. |

What I miss:
Cheap prices and sales on fashionable clothing
Organic products
Knowing what I am eating exactly
Being part of the drama and excitement of the election year Especially THIS time around
Drinking from the tap
Cheap books
Craigslist (I know there is one for DF, but it doesn't compare)
Free nights and weekends cell phone plans
What I don't miss:
That attitude of self-entitlement
The attitude that I-don't-need-anything-from-anyone
15 dollar DVDs and CDs
Polluting the environment with my car 'cause there was no other way to get around the city
the lack of cheap or free awesome things to do
prices of produce |

A non cobblestone road to ride a roadbike on.
A clean stream to fish in.
A non cobblestone road to jog on.
Don't miss:
annoying republicans, and supporters of the current regime
Oh wait, I live in San Miguel de Allende, so I I still have to put with the aforementioned.
sigh. |
