Surely not at government hospitals in the UAE. The main one in Abu Dhabi insisted that a colleague's wife was not pregnant. In fact she knew she was.

Just like everywhere in the world, I assume that one finds that some hospitals and doctors are better than others.

During nine years in the UAE I never heard anything good about government hospitals, other than "They're OK at stabilizing you, but after that, you need to transfer to a private hospital."

No, I do not assume that government hospital systems are equal around the world, any more than state university systems are.

The only time I or anyone I knew set foot in a 'government' hospital in the Emirates was for the required government blood test.

And since the topic of this thread is pregnancy, everyone went to the specialist maternity hospital.

In the Gulf, there are different levels of so-called 'government' hospitals too.

VS,

In my school district you can take up to 2 months without pay. Many women take out disability insurance, because having a baby in their opinion is a disability. That way you can have a pay check while you're off. My son was born in April so I ended up missing checks and the remaining for that year were TINY..

I'm suprised to hear that they actually pay while you're off the usual time. How long do you have to work at a location before you are eligible for maternity benefits? Here you're covered immediately..

As far as I know, you are covered immediately. But, I don't know of any teachers who arrived pregnant and challenged the coverage. Perhaps someone else has run into that situation.

The US has the worst maternity and child care in the developed world. And so it will stay...

Unless we can somehow swing Obama into the presidency, along with increased numbers of Democrats in the Senate. They WILL push for universal health insurance--which does exist in Massachusetts and Hawaii already, by the way--and I would hope, concurrent with that, we would see the establishment of improved child care.

Does anyone actually know (personally) an expat who has had a baby in the Emirates? I'm wondering what their experience was like.

Yes, plenty. People who have had 1, 2, 3 or 4 children here. At UGRU maternity leave is usually given without a struggle, and regular staff cover but as paid overtime: teachers volunteer for it. It's different from cover for people who are just sick for a few days which is unpaid. As for the hospital care - I know people who have had their babies in a private hospital in Al Ain (Oasis Hospital, the oldest hospital in Abu Dghabi Emirate) and another who was referred to a state hospital, Tawam, and all were happy.

The thing to check out is what your health insurance will cover. Sometimes it won't cover all of costs related to maternity care so you need to be aware of that. But given the cost of raising a child for the next 16 or 20 or more years, that's hardly the biggest of your worries....

Really?
I did not know that Uncle Sam is not looking after his children, especially the African Americans and Asian Americans! Laughing

Well, without a solidarity" health politics, Obama can do nothing to promote 'universal health insurance' for every American, including the minorities!

Asian-Americans? Do you ever think or research before blabbing? Moreover, VS is referring to JOB-related maternity LEAVE and benefits.

Right and the same people that will say exactly that will praise the current government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac...

Socialism is only good if it benefits the oligarchs, not the populace..

What, Uncle Scot? Communism? Where? USA?

To the "Obamamania and "McCainmania" people, I say this:
The American novelist, Gore Vidal said in 1977: There is only one party in the United States, the Property Party ... and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat. "! Laughing
