Man am I fuming right now... The blody school retracted their offer to my wife and I just 2 days befor I get on the plane. Now, I have a plane ticket to HK in my hands and nowhere to go.
the school knew all along that I hold a Moroccan passport while my wife hails from Guatemala. They understood that we had lived all our lives in the U.S. , have our degrees from a U.S. university and speak a perfect english with a bit of a midwestern twang.

today, after every detail is negotiated and we have our plane tickets, they send an e-mail informing us that our services are no longer required because they are not sure that the students will understand us.

now what the hell do we do? any advice folks? my wife is freaking out and I am getting there too....
Should we just bite the bullet, fly over and try to find something over there or should we try finding another school on short notice (plane leaves monday at 12:45 p.m).....

and the god**am liquor store just closed... no teqilla to help my brain deigest the news... HELP

If you are sure you want to work/live in China, then board the plane and come on over. First decide which city you want to live in then go there by train and start meeting people. You should be able to line up some private jobs while you make acquaintance with the "real" schools.
This is a great place if you have the maturity to learn a few new tricks and be open minded to new experiences. Good Luck

A crummy thing for the school to do. Maybe it;s for the best if they are that crazy...The good news is term is about to start so it should be the best time of year to be looking...There is a sticky at the top of this board with good sites for jobs.

Well, I did have an option to get the contract signed and all that good stuff, but there was no doctor around that wanted to touch the health form provided by the chinese embassy.

a wise man once said: live to learn, learn to live. I learned my lesson on that one.... since the plane ticket is non refundable, I will go ahead and board the plane. The one good thing is that I planed for my wife to come over 2 weeks after me just in case shit hit the fan.

Hopefully, they won't be too picky about letting me into HK with my doggy.

You're coming to China (HK) with no job, and bringing a dog?? You should check on quarantine regulations; they may be up to 3 months. Probably won't be free, either. Why not at least leave Fido with your wife, if she isn't coming for at least two weeks?

We left our dog in the States with relatives. I'd never try to bring a dog to China, but then, that's a whole 'nother thread that's been around for awhile.

It's really not a good idea to bring your dog. There will be a quarantine and your dog just might go missing and end up on someone's dinner table.

Now is prime time to find a job if you both have degrees.
Just post a quick resume on the sites listed in the link above & sort through the offers from actual schools, not recruiters. There Will be plenty offers so make yourself a new email account.
Tell them you will be here & can call them for interviews; leave the nationalities out till later. Say your from America & graduated from schools there.
Your wife can start sorting them out while you�re on your way.

I�m I guessing wrong that the �Midwestern accent is from the Midwest US?
I wonder if the old school thinks Midwest & Mideast are the same & don�t know where Morocco is�. They prolly found another teacher anyways.

I hear that with SARS & the like, dogs aren�t allowed on public transportation, busses, train & so on�..`could be wrong but private transport is costly.

& you might as well let us know the Name & location of this School for future references, if you type it in full, it will come up for peoples searches later if they apply there.

I wouldn�t worry, this will prolly turn into a blessing.

And again, finding a job shouldn't be to hard. Like someone said, pick a city, and go a looking. Lot's of schools still needing teachers. I am still getting ofers from some schools in Henan, School starts next week, but if the start you on Match 1st, they can save a month salary

I just arrived in HK after 48 hours in between flights and airports; the Air France dudes were on strike again and this time, Alitalia joined them. Talk about a gigantic clusterf**ck.
Thank you all for the advice here or using PM... I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

P.S: I ended up giving the doggy to a friend in Paris... what better home could there be for a French Poodle than the city of lights.

Morroccan with Guatemalan wife. I bet you have pretty kids.

Jobs are not hard to come by here. If your visa is out of service, just go to HK and return with a three month "L" visa, then look around.
