| If "Jong-Li" is one and the same with the city also spelled "Chungli," then I have been there and do not deem it uninhabitable. I really don't know why some would consider it a bad place to live when it's exactly the same as any other Taiwanese burg. I was in Banciao once, too, by accident, and I couldn't see any difference between it and any other Taiwanese burg. Since you'll be working in Jong-Li, you may as well live there and avoid wasting time and money on a commute. |

It depends how close your school is to the train station!!!

Very very good point - I used to live in NeiLi and work in Taoyuan - the train ride was only 4minutes, but then had at least a 35min walk to the school. Wasn't nice in the rain!
I kind of like JongLi - as englishmaster said, there's not much to make it different to other taiwanese places. I much prefer it to Taoyuan - it's not as crowed together, the teachers there seemed to have a much better community than in Taoyuan. The middle of town is nicer too.
Try JongLi for a bit, seems a bit silly not to. If you want a smaller place, NeiLi (between Taoyuan and JongLi) was a nice place - I even lived in a house instead of a huge block of flats, which was cool. All depends on what you want from where you live though, peace and quiet or entertainment! |

| Thanks to everyone for the advice. It's encouraging to know that Jhong-Li might not be hell on earth. I'll probably start my search there. And maybe living there will help (force) me to learn Mandarin more quickly than I might if I lived in Taipei. Not that I have any real idea of what I'm talking about! |
