@Anda,

I suggest that you log into www.ajarn.com and read up on the current situation for teachers in Thailand. FTs in Thailand can only make the "visa run" to renew their 30 day tourist visa twice. That means a FT has only 90 days in country to get the required teaching license and "non im B" visa which, by the way, must be renewed every 90 days.

Shanghai isn't the type of place I'd want to be getting a low end pay packet. There are many cities where one can rent an apartment from 500 to 1,000 RMB a month. The government pays a lot more to government workers in the big cities here as the costs are so much higher. Try for jobs now instead of collecting so much infomation. I wouldn't be spending any money on a course here without a Uni degree to back it up. Try now instead of waiting and having to do it latter anyway. At least it will give you a feel to what you are up against.

That's the conclusion which I've been slowly leaning towards. I'm thinking that taking the CELTA in the UK, with minimum expenditure, would probably be wiser. However, surely searching for jobs at this stage would be nothing if not a waste of time? I know I'm not going to get anything without at least a CELTA, after all. (I do have a weekend TEFL cert., but I know they count for sweet FA in these circles.)

I arrived in late July on a tourist L 30 day visa. On the 30th day I went to the office to process the work visa. No hassle really. I heard from some people you have to leave mainland China to process the work visa, like a trip to Hong Kong, and I heard a medical check was needed. I did neither. Maybe it has to do with the province and/or the clout of the people who hire you? I spent 5 weeks not working, and spent a lot of money. I believe I got a good job though, so no complaints so far.

Dear Friend,

It's the province...you are in one of the two-or-three provinces where it remained "business-as-almost-usual" throughout the trying times this summer..

All the best,

NCL

Which two or three provinces are these?

^^^^^^^^^^^

Good question. Anyway, as little as I know, I'd say one could do worse than Jiangsu.
