Well, every time I've come across black and other ethnic minority people thinking of coming to Russia, I've warned them of potential hostility. For some reason, I was criticised for being kind of racist, but, as is suggested by these videos, I was just trying to ensure that they didn't get the stuffing knocked out of them. Yes, it's horrible. I find it particularly ironic, as noted in one of the films, that some of these people are actually nazis, given that the latter saw off millions of Russians in WW2.

Yes, I think most people do not realise (just by watching these vids) how dangerous it can be in Moscow or even St. Petersburg. If the police can't/wont do anything about roving gangs knifing children and foreigners, then its a lawless place indeed and beyond most peoples idea of danger.

On my last trip (2005) I wanted to return via Russia, but I think that might have ended my travelling days if I did. I had no idea this was out there.

Most people do not realize how dangerous it can be in Omaha, Nebraska, for the simple reason that they do not live there.

News, by definition, reports ab-normal, rather than normal life. From Russia, the US looks like a pretty nasty place on the news - so much violence reported all the time...oh, yeah - it's "the news". Only none of it is new.

They won't report what is good, normal and right in the news.

Dangerous? It can be dangerous anywhere as the previous poster said!!!

But in saying that, when I was speaking with students at a Siberian University, I did not expect some of them to be as openly racist as they were .... but its just talk. And they were definitely the minority.

I also know some black people here, from Ghana, Nigeria and Jamaica. I was told that in 2 years, they were attacked once .... but the Police dealt with it very well and they are actually friends with the Policemen who helped them in that situation.

Normally, the Russian people are just curious. So everytime I am walking with them, they are always stopped and asked for photos, look at their hands, hair, everything. It is quite funny for me .... and them! But I guess if you are not the kind of person who can find a funny side to that, don't go to remote places Smile

Stop with the politically correct nonsense and tell people the truth. Saying that it can happen anywhere doesn't prepare anyone for the reality that is Russia.

Russians are warm, friendly people in general but a strong streak of nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism runs through the population. Does that mean a dark-skinned person will be attacked? Not at all, but the probability is higher than in many parts of the world and the cops aren't always in a rush to find the culprits. The quality of medical service is spotty and remember that most cops and medical personnel speak little to no English.

My advice to a darker person of any nationality is to never travel alone, avoid groups of drunk/drinking young guys and watch out religiously for skinheads. They are highly unpredictable, can attack in places one would normally consider safe and are actually more dangerous when they are sober than not.

I have to say that as even the more educated and generally nice friends I've made in Russia have tended towards racism. This being the case, it rather makes sense to say that the less cultivated citizenry are more likely to be violent rather than just prejudiced. Of course that's not all of them and there's no guarantee of being attacked, but yes, you will be in a different world with a different set of attitudes.

Another way of putting it is that they were overrun by the Mongols and have no wish for a repeat, even if it's done in a peaceful manner. They're not interested in becoming "multicultural", and I can't blame them. Why should they?

That said, no excuses for violence. I have no problem with legislation or quotas, though. That's peaceful, too.

Every people ought to have the right to reject multiculturalism if they want to.

Well, given that the Russians already have a large number of ethnic minorities living under their rule, and they discriminate against them, then I don't think they have that right.

Also, the nationalists blame the Mongols for lots of things. One guy who was told that Russian is rich in swear words blamed it on them; of course, if not for the Mongols, they'd be utterly clean-living. Laughing
