I live in Osaka (and work for ECC) and think that you should be quite happy with Kobe. I go there a lot and it's a great city and I'd definitely consider living there if I was ambitious enough to move. As others have said, it's much more attractive than Osaka and has a great atmosphere. Osaka beats Kobe on nightlife, but I think that's about it. But you can be in Shinsaibashi (downtown Osaka) in 45 mins so a night out is no problem.

So I just re-read the OP and I guess I should get around to answering the question as I didn't befroe. To the OP, Kobe is ok. It has a big city feel. There's stuff to do, places to go, places to eat, places to hang out. Osaka and Nara and Kyoto are within an easy commute. I think you'll be fine.

Kobe? Bleah. Smile

Too small to be a real city, too large to be clean and livable. Very full of non-Japanese busily telling you how great the place is all the time. If I wanted that sort of experience I'd live in London and at least have access to some genuine history and interest in places.

And that's the thing about Kobe IMO: people seem to either love it or hate it. Def. try it and see if you like it. Don't take the word of anyone on here, including me. Cool

Exactly. You won't know until you've been here a bit and unless you've spent time here before it's all the same initially anyway. Plus if you end up not liking it, just move. ECC doesn't restrict that and if you want to move to Osaka or Kyoto or somthing I can't see that being a problem. In the end you choose where to live and how much to make of it. (I still think you'll like it though Smile)

Kobe is a very pleasant city. It isn't bustling and doesn't have a wild nightlife but it isn't boring either.
