Hi Everyone,

about 1 month ago I accepted an offer from ECC. My documents were received about 1 1/2 weeks later. I was just wondering if anyone knows how long it usually takes to get your placement offer and date.

Hi Tymon

Congrats! I hope you like ECC when you eventually get here and finish training. Here is a pretty exact break-down of times and processes from start to finish.

Jan 20th Applied online
Jan 26th Received email inviting me to an interview
Feb 6th Interview
Feb 14th Offer

Feb 21st Documents sent for CoE
Feb 31st Documents received

May 14th Placement offered
May 14th Placement accepted

Jun 5th Statement of Health sent
Jun 22nd Statement of Health received

Jul 8th ECC received CoE and posted it
Jul 11th I received CoE

Jul 8th Apollo (Housing agent that ECC uses in Kinki and Nagoya) offered housing.
Jul 20th After much back and forth between Apollo and I, I accepted an apartment. You can be picky.

Jul 17th Took the CoE and passport to embassy
Jul 24th Received passport with Visa

Aug 10th Flight to japan
Aug 17th Started training
Sept 4th Finished training

Quite a long time, eh?

Wow Ryu, that is a long time. I thought my Aeon time was really long:

March 19 first interview (I had applied online about a week prior, just had to wait for the interview)
April 2 second interview (since I live within commuting distance my interview was two weeks later)
Job offer April 8

We had attempted to get a placement right away but my school wouldn't release my diploma early.
June 9 received diploma
Job Placement offer given June 30
Offer accepted July 8 (I would have accepted day of but the recruiter was out of town for the week)
Paper work filed and mailed July 12

and I have now been waiting for my COE which I should get sometime between now and November 13th. My flight leaves November 27th. So if my school had co-operated the time would be far shorter.

May I ask why ECC's process is so long? What exactly is the statement of health (is it like being required to get a physical for work etc)? I was just told by Aeon to get a doctor's check up before heading over

I think relies on luck quite a bit, depending on when they have an opening and where it is in relation to your preferences.

I notice that Ryu waited 2.5 months before getting a placement offered but I only waited one week before I they offered me a spot. I think I got lucky as I had a preference for Kinki district and they happened to have an opening in Kinki just after my interview.

Initially after I got the job in late July they told me I probably wouldn't get an offer until November/December for an opening at the beginning of the school year but then one week later to my surprise I got the email of an offer starting November!

The statement of health is reasonably thorough. Chest X-ray, eye exam, and a doctor needs to check you over for blood pressure, illness, anything that could prevent you from working.

Oh ok Ryu. Aeon doesn't ask for things like that but I feel a little better with the list you had to do. I had a chest x-ray done for an infection about 8 months ago, turned out it was fine. I just got new glasses a year ago and had my doctor do blood pressure and blood tests so I'm all good lol

I agree, ECC does take a little bit longer than some other eikaiwa. Everything took a long time for me, but I had three months between accepting the job and graduating, so I couldn't get my placement before July.

Congrats on the job!!

I too will be starting with ECC soon. But I don't think that the process has been that long. All the paperwork takes about 3 months I think for most companies.

My timeline:

Interview July 3rd
Job offer July 18th
Placement offer (district) July 26
Specific location (Kobe) Sept 28
Housing finalized Oct 10
Applied for visa at embassy Oct 10
Visa pick up Oct 16 ( That is the day it is ready - I have not picked it up yet)
Flight Oct 30th (IS ANYONE ELSE ON THIS FLIGHT FROM CANADA??)
Start Date Nov 5th (IS ANYONE ELSE STARTING ON THIS DAY?)

I might have left out a few things - but that's the gist of it. Basically from interview to start date was 4 months, not too bad.

I should also add that I had no preferences on location (I wanted a surprise).
I also preferred mixed multiple housing - I believe it is harder to get a place to your self. I chose multiple so that I could have a separate bedroom and living space and as it turns out (or so I've been told) I have a decent sized western style apartment and two flat mates.

Ashtonmd - I think i'll be starting training in Osaka in a group straight after yours, i'll be starting on November 26th!

I presume your training for Kobe will be in Osaka right?

I'm glad to hear that there are "decent" sized wester style apartments that ECC arrange, I am also hoping to get myself into one of those! Please post again when you get to Japan and let us know what the apartment and the arrival was like! I'll be gagging for info in the last few weeks before I leave as you are now and by then i'll know where i'm going, I don't even know if i'll be joining you in Kobe or with the rest of the crowd in Osaka...

So far I haven't found anyone who's starting on my training session yet either so if anyone's out there let me know!

Good eye! For a little greater anonymity, I changed the start date by a few months and applied the changes to the rest of the dates. The timeline and is accurate, but not the starting date of it.

I've been working at ECC for about 7 months now. They separated the placements into 3 categories, right? I chose a job in the Kanto region and preferably Tokyo (which I didn't get), but it depends on the openings (which is a major toss up). Each region has many prefectures with their own ECC schools. ECC is growing and growing so getting your preferred job is not going to be as easy as before. You don't really know where you're going to live unless you specified you would ONLY accept Tokyo, Osaka, etc. If you didn't do so, your "preferences" are just that... preferences. There are 7 prefectures in the Greater Tokyo region alone, so you have a small chance to get into Tokyo if that's what you're going for. Who knows where you'll end up? Only a handful of my training group landed a job in Tokyo and that's where most of them wanted to work. Despite all this, I'm grateful to have landed a job about an hour away from Tokyo. This makes the Japan experience much more Japan'ish rather than global.

I read your response to Tymon and I just have a couple of questions about a couple of items in your timeline. This is something anyone can answer as well.

Now the first question may be a bit naive of me, but was is a CoE?

Also, in terms of your statement of health, from what I've seen a few jobs posted in O-Heyo Sensai request full physicals results. Would it quicken the process to get one in advance to show all potential employers or does ECC have particulars when it comes to the Statement of Health?
