That is true. They do only give out tax records once a year, and usually you'll get most, if not all of your taxes back.

Latest update:

Nothing much to report except I've been on island over 183 days and they still took out 20% taxes. Also, they cheated me out of 2 hours of work (didn't get paid). The boss lady is rather subtle. She didn't bring my time sheets this time which listed 70 hours (I calculated), but I got paid for 68 hours of work. Not something I recognized when I didn't have my calculator (though I did notice the lack of tax reduction).

If you want to check my math: I arrived in Taiwan on May 1. Started working on May 7. Left for Hong Kong on May 29, returned May 30 and have been here ever since. My math says if you take out 2 days for my visa run, I accumulated 183 days around November 2 or so. What say you?

Giving 3 week notice today. Wish me luck!

I e-mailed notice to the big boss (whose picture is at both schools and manages the one) and also mailed him notice (gua hao=certified mail?).

I'm physically handing my other boss (manager and wife to the guy boss) my letter of resignation and telling her personally. Going to ask her to sign her copy and mine (I have 2 copies). Sound as wise as can be? Or am I doing something wrong?

So are you planning on heading straight back to your home country in 3 weeks?

Hope you get paid whatever you deserve.

Pretty much, yeah. Just heading back to America in 3 weeks (plus one day).

Thanks for the well wishes. If I don't get paid what I deserve, I'll just do what I can to publicize my griefs on forums like this. Plus, I go to church in Taiwan, which has let me make over 100 Taiwanese friends/acquaintances who are locals. I have a dozen very close friends in Taibei (also native Taiwanese). I have no problem asking every single one of them to spread the word about my school. It may do nothing, but I'll feel better. Odds are someone knows someone with legal authority who can cause my boss grief. But that's only if they go out of their way to cause me grief. I just want whats fair.

BTW, my boss wouldn't meet with me. I left my letter of resignation on her desk and she said she wants to talk with me on Monday. So, that's just kinda weird.

Update and conclusion:

Gave notice back in November, left December 5th and everything worked out. Got a friend to take care of taxes, and he insisted on paying me the amount so he wouldn't have to worry about transferring the money. I paid the 25,000 fee, but taxes made up for it and I got paid for November and everything. So it all worked out. Thanks to everyone for all your help. My bosses reasoning for the fee was funny. Pretty much said "We absolutely must exact this fee because we haven't found a replacement teacher yet." As if finding a replacement teacher has any bearing on whether I paid the fine or not.

It was a good enough experience working in Taiwan. Liked my job, hated my boss who treated me like a second class citizen practically the whole time. She wasn't even ready with my final pay on my last day of work like we agreed. Had to wait until the morning of the 6th before that got squared away. Imagine if my boss gave me 3 weeks notice about something that is my primary responsibility and when the day arrived I said "Oh, I'm not ready, let's take care of it later."

Can't say that I could ever see this as a career. In the end, everything worked out well enough.

A small update:

I asked my boss for my tax records/receipts and she said they only give them out once a year right before you need to file taxes. Does this sound kosher to anyone? At least, it flies in the face of some of the advice I've gotten here. Any thoughts?

HA! what a lying bitch, you should get a tax receipt every month in the form of a legit pay stub. if you're not, you're schools not legit and i'll bet you a hundred bucks they're not paying taxes on your wei guo ren ass.

sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience, i wouldn't give up on Taiwan so quickly though. You gotta get outta that school or renegotiate the contract, and although you have been treated like shit, and the school doesn't deserve a quitting notice, i would urge you to try and give them notice and work that out b/c there are far too many teachers in this industry who have just bailed on schools, leaving students hanging and it has even forced my school to withhold pay two weeks after to make sure u dont just bail. I work at David's and its a pretty decent outfit though.

In 2 years in Taiwan I've NEVER received a pay stub with itemized deductions. The first job was paid daily on an hourly rate so I guess that makes sense as it would have been an accounting nightmare.
Place I'm at right now direct deposits to my bank account and for some reason thinks that I don't need to / care to know how much they're depositing every month. Soooo, every month I make the same request and they grudgingly give me a hand written note detailing the pay and deductions.
From the 'Accounting Department' no less ... what a joke, it seems to be a comletely foreign concept to them that I'd like to see how much I've been paid without making a trip to the bank to check.

Do you teach a lot of adults at David's?

sorry to hijack the thread, but i've worked at Wall Street and now Davids, and at WSI, i was given a paper pay stub w/ itemized amounts for salary, bonuses, health insurance, and taxes, and at davids its an email pay stub, i thought that was the norm lol. guess i'm lucky. what school do u work at?

i dont get too many hours at davids until after CNY, class max is 12. they're hiring at the Banqiao (Fuzhong station) / Sanchong branch. i believe its just parttime. but if u PM we can discuss further.

on about the original poster's questions, how can the illegality of the 'contract severance fine' be substantiated? i plan on leaving mid contract to work in another country and i dont want to pay $30K.
