So wouldn't that mean it is the average. I know there are positions which pay higher, but the average salary for a FT is 4000-5000. |

I think this line of thought is just esl teachers selling themselves short. If I was teaching University I might take a job for 4000-5000, but if I was teaching kids I wouldn't do anything less then 6000. I feel confident in my ability to get at least that much, and all I have is one year teaching experience and TESOL certification.
4000-5000 is lower end, not average. |

| It can be expensive. I think like anywhere it depends on how you live. But salaries tend to be higher here as well. I know many teachers who save at least one thousand US dollars a month here. |

| There are a lot of cheap places here. It's convenient to eat on the street or at the small shops. |

These are very disparate statements. It seems odd that in our community there is not only a lack of consensus on the average salary, but such a wide gap between one persons definition and another.
I know that bradly said in Shenzen they pay more also, but $1000 U.S. is somewhere between 7000 and 8000 rmb. Add in, i'm guessing, at lest 4000 rmb to live reasonably well every month and it seems that the salaries Bradly is talking about are at least 11000-12000 rmb/month. There's a tremendous gap between 4000-5000 rmb a month and 11000-12000 rmb a month. |

There are so many different settings though, with equally tremendous gaps in hours and holidays. 'ESL in China' is too broad a term to be represented by a single average salary figure. Think more along the lines of -
Typical university 5500
State schools 7000
Private Kindy 9000
Langauge school 11000
International departments and schools and corporate training have higher averages again, although here we begin to approach the borderline between ESL teaching and subject teaching, which is quite different.

Not for now
$1000 = Y6828 (xe.com, today) |

Who do you teach part - time to? I guess I am sidetracking my own thread here, but just wondering what demographic this is? It seems like teaching at a University would give you a large, easily acessable pool to draw from, but maybe there are more parents who want you to teach their kids on the side then adults looking for a tutor.

From what I've heard it's hard to save much of anything in Thailand. |

| There are always offers to teach part-time here. Most are from two hundred to three hundred an hour....I work for some companies as well as other programs on campus for students who are planning to go abroad or who need to take the IELTS or TOEFL. |
