If you are so easily deterred from doing things, then Thailand isn't the place. I don't think that traveling abroad at all is.

Come on. Take the plunge. Be an adult, stop being timid.

1000's of people come here and begin teaching without being led around. You don't need mommy to hold your hand.

Get your tourist visa, get a ticket, come on over. Go over to Ko San road for a few days to get your feet wet. Find better places to stay and start the job search.

Don't worry, just come. Worst case scenario, you die. If you are dead then you don't have to worry about anything. Actually worse case scenario, you are here for a few months, have a great time, spend all of your money and go back home to start saving again.

Don't become a person that says, what if... just come on over. You will be fine.

sorry about the tough love, but you really don't have to give up over political things that have nothing to do with you.

ROTFLMAO

This is, by far, one of the best replies I have received in a very, very long time. Very Happy I laughed so hard that tears came to my eyes.
Yes, I agree one must make the plunge, and I have for years now. I would not have taught students in 16 countries if I had not. It is not timidness, just jitters, I guess, from recent bad experiences.

On the positive side, my recruiter (the one whom I spoke of earlier) emailed again today. I am a bit surprised at how interested he is in me, even though I far outweigh his requirements. Now at last I have clear answers, but the pay is low, and for 2 months in the year the pay drops to 1/3 of the normal amount.

So it is not an ideal, but maybe to get my feet wet in Thailand, like you say, it is a start, and guaranteed. The recruiter is AYC Thailand, with offices in Bangkok. Till now, I have had no cause to distrust them. We'll have to see how things go. You know what I hate to see? I hate seeing the land of such beautiful smiles turned into a chaos bin with all these recent strikes and protests. I wish they would see how ugly they look from our outside vantage points. It hurts so much, even though we are not affected.

Do you need a TEFL to get a work permit in Thailand?

I guess that depends on the employer. Some require and are not flexible, but some are. If you have a higher University degree, they might overlook that.
