From Middle East Times, 19 NOV 2008:

"CAIRO -- Egyptian Raouf Amin languishes in a Saudi jail and is punished
with 70 lashes once a week.
Cut off from his family in Egypt, the 52-year-
old doctor was convicted for prescribing painkillers to a Saudi princess that led to her addiction.

An appeal court judge ruled that Amin will be beaten weekly until he has received 1,500 lashes -
and then he'll spend another 14 years behind bars.
The judge doubled the original punishment meted out to him a little over one year ago in the lower court where Amin was
sentenced to a seven-year jail term with 750 lashes.

Not surprisingly, human rights groups and the Egyptian doctor's syndicate are outraged.
The Middle East Times was told by a human rights lawyer that Amin was given his first 70 lashes last week and will get 70 more this week.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the foreign ministry are taking
an earnest look into finding a way to have Amin quickly returned to Egypt.

The doctor, who has lived and worked in the Gulf state for more than 20 years, had been treating
the princess for several months for back pains after she visited the hospital in which he worked.

Ahmed Amin, the doctor's son, who himself was born in Saudi Arabia, claims the woman went into the hospital and specified the medication
she wanted.

The woman had been receiving similar treatment in the United States after she had fallen from a horse while riding."

Rest of the story can be found in ...

Well, the horse had caused the back problem of the princess in the USA, and the poor Egyptian is now paying for his medical treatmentt of the princess!

I can't find the article right now, but I read last night that the Egyptian government had banned all Egyptian doctors from working in Saudi hospitals in retaliation for this. Then I saw this morning that doctors in the government hospitals were exempted from the ban.

If KSA had to function without foreign doctors, things would be in bad shape. And the doctors are fortunate enough to have high-profile jobs that make the news when something like this happens. Think of all the poor foreign laborers and the abuse that they endure.

Well, well, while in the magic kingdom, women are banned from driving cars, the princess of the magic kingdom was riding horses and porsches in the USA under the hospitality of Uncle Sam!!

BTW, Teta Mia, do you think the doctor can resist the 1500 lashes distributed over 24 weeks? Imagine you are in his shoes?

Maybe I didn't make myself clear: I absolutely ABHOR what has happened to this doctor. And I think you meant to say "withstand" rather than "resist"? In any case, it is clear that he doesn't have the power to resist and I can't see how any human could withstand such a punishment. It is despicable.

Kingdom of Humanity

(Official motto of Saudi Arabia)

(A more apt one would be what it says on the left for my location)

The news is so boring here in the west.....

You only ever get stories like this one in Saudi........

I remember one of my favourite headlines in the Arab News

An Eye for an Eye........again it was an unfortunate Egyptian who was the victim by way of having his eye surgically removed as punishment for causing the same thing to happen to someone else...

Only in the good old KSA.

I really wonder what the punishment would have been had it been:

Saudi doctor, princess patient
Caucasian doctor, princess patient

Egyptian doctor, village patient
Saudi doctor, village patient
Caucasian doctor, village patient

Actually no, I don't have to wonder.

These princesses addict themselves. Many of them lead lonely unhappy lives while their princes are out cruising around the world. They come home to breed and then go off somewhere else with one of their Lebanese or Syrian or Irish honey babes. These poor women get desperate, some try drink, some watch porn, some get fat and some turn to mind-numbing drugs. My girlfriend used to tutor one of these women and despite her riches, gold, Armani, etc., she was miserable and unhappy. Her husband has two other wives equally lonely and spends most of his time in California with his beach bunny (no kidding - one of Hugh Hefners girls.)

The poor doctor got caught up in the Princess's misery and now has to pay the price.

In Saudi Gazette today:

A man who sexually abused and raped a 10 YEAR OLD GIRL for a MONTH has been sentenced to 500 lashes and 5 years in jail.

Let's see... raping a child for a month, or giving a princess a drug she asked for... what's worse? Oh yeah, the latter is 3 times worse Rolling Eyes

And the worst thing is: Rapists used to be executed sometime ago (as they should be), but for a few years now, they are just given slaps on the wrist, such as 5 year jail terms, which even pale in comparison to the jail terms rapists are given in the US, which are known for being lax.

It is at times like this when I start fantasizing I had superpowers (such as those found in movie/cartoon superheroes).
