nice to see a western uni owning up to their mistakes and taking such a publicity hit. i can't imagine how that is going to affect their name, the current graduates chances of getting a better job, or any future enrollments from foreign countries there. then, the foreign students visa application process to newcastle there and the trust.

So going abroad is the choice of those with ulterior motives that have nothing to do with higher education!
i've spoken to one of my students a few days ago. he told me that his parents were going to immigrate to the US. they are biz people in china. they make good money. this student knows little from english language and his social skills are at near zero. bad enough that he's signed into an expensive program to go abroad and join a western uni, while his parents prosper in china.

what i am worried about is that we might be preparing some students that may be used by their parents. imagine how some chinese biz people make money and how conveniently they can just "move abroad". sorry, just a thought.

on the topic of motives, i've had some students that've told me it's completely legal to work part time while studying. it was illegal in canada before (don't know now). apparently, in australia they can work up to some 20 hours weekly. aside the fact they could be coming to the country for jobs and sending money home, does the visa regulation realize they are foreign students to be expected to work hard in the unis? i'm astonished by what i've been told. and, yet another guestion for the australian government i'd have; do they have enough jobs to offer for every citizen???

by the way, there are some very strange characters (chinese looking) coming to centers around china that prepare high school grads or alleged grads for western unis. these characters advertise themselves as the western unis reps. i've seen a few. they even give some lovely presentations on their unis abroad. i smell a rat, but hard to tell what kinda Wink

cheers and beers to quality students from chinese high schools that really want their degrees and make this world better place

To add what English has said. I visited a friend in Australia this past June and then brought a package to a student from Xi'an who is studying for her Master's Degree in Finance and accounting ( evidently there is a severe shortage of qualified people with these skills in Australia today. ) Her English is so-so and I was surprised when she told me that she scored 6.0 on IELTS. She was working for her uncle's pizza shop at least 5 days a week ( under the table ??? ) She said that she would be given a top priority to obtain a green card I'm from America ), once she finishes her studies. Over lunch she told me that she plans to change her major to the Hospitality/Hotel Management major as it will be easier for her to stay in Australia and work once she receives her Master's Degree. I only know a handful of people who have gone abroad and left China. I'd like to know what percentage of students who go abroad are actually able to stay and work there. For Master's Degrees in China, you can obtain model/practice tests for the university that you want to go to and it is my belief, that many, many Chinese students choose other majors to start their Master's program. They have no foundation for their new major. When they come back to China and most invariably do, what are their job prospects ???

In Australia, they can work up to 20 hours/week during term, unlimited during vacation. That's just in legal taxed work though. Most Chinese go into the black economy, working for other Chinese.

yes, they go undgerground to make some extra bucks on top of what their grafty parents send. but if they are allowed to work legally in australia for such amount of hours as 20 weekly, there might be a motive for those chinese students to go to australia. Wink
i'd be ticked off havin'foreigners take my job opportunities away. then, there's a fact that those foreign students drive up the tuition fees at unis.

as i prepare my high school grad and non grads for their western unis, i am wondering why i'm doing this

cheers and beers to some countries visa regulations that might be acting in the interest of their countries educational systems Smile

For the four year program foreigners keep tuition rates down. That's why England sold out their academic integrity, the Chinese students are a cash cow. I believe foe many schools, the Chinese student pays twice as much. That's the case at any public uni

grad school is a different matter

right on..as we speak, the rest of the developed countries are followin'egland

750 mate, you've quoted me on something that was meant to be for work opportunities as oppose to uni opportunities you've brought up there.
again, i'm amazed about how easy are some countries with chinese students. not only that they allow them to work part time (out of unis cj), but also the visa office does not request a full medical check. for example, chinese do not have to go for a blood test to australian unis. and, i have to face a needle and an x ray cancer in china on yearly basis Mad

cheers and beers to bendin'over when the money is needed Very Happy
