I loved living in District 1 (Backpackers) - Its great fun and its a cool way to get introduced to Vietnam. But I did spend far too muh money there.

I also enjoyed living in District 3 - It's close to everything including some great places to hangout and loads of schools.

District 10 - District 10 is a personal favorite. Can't really explain why, but maybe it's bec it's close to my favorite Bi Da hall and nightclub.

I regret never having lived in District 7 (Phu My Hung), it is a beautiful and modern place kind of like Singapore with all the condos. Some say it is a souless place as it is not really what Vietnam is about, but I always liked it. (pretty expensive though).

district 1 - bui vien and pham ngu lao area would be a nice start for you. PEople can speak English, a lot of restaurants and varied shops. Cheap guesthouses to choose from...cheers!
