|

Hello all!
I am one week away from being CELTA certified and I am thinking of heading down to Peru to volunteer for a month or so. All of the websites I have come across are asking for thousands of $'s to volunteer with them. This seems weird to me...but I could be wrong. Is it common to have to pay to volunteer? Does anyone have any ideas on who to volunteer with or where to volunteer in Peru? Ideally, I'd be in Cusco but I'm open to suggestions!
Any thoughts, ideas or experiences you have to share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
L |

Volunteering: Volunteering can be expensive and some places charge up to 2000USD for a month. Some affordable programmes include
AYNI,
Awaiting Angels,
Cross Cultural Solutions,
Habitat for Humanity and
Teach Peru.
Try also www.volunteersouthamerica.net lots of cheap places there. Don't pay thousands of dollars, paying a bit for room and board, or bring materials, like paper, books is OK. Other than that, it's going into pockets of corrupt people.
For Piura, I'd recommend AYNI. CUsco, I'm not sure.

I'm not really qualified to speak for Peru since it's been years since I've been there. Speaking for Colombia though, there are loads of opportunities for doing unpaid work here. Prerequisite is though you need to be able speak Spanish for dealing with the people you want to help and perhabs even more importantly to gain the confidence of the local organisations you'd be working with. I definitely wouldn't fork out USD 2000 for volunteering. Once you get here, you'll find some good uses for that money. A friend of mine once ran a soup kitchen here in Bogot. Cooked food, packed it into paper boxes and distributed it on the streets. Better spending money that way than paying an organisation to do what? |

Every so often there is a fellow with really off-the-wall job ads posted.
I'm sue he'd be happy to put you up for as long as you'd be willing to work.
(If I could only recall his name...) |
