I know this is a long shot but does anyone know anything about the African Training Company, advertised on tefl.com? At first glance it sounds like a 401 scam: just too good to be true. |

It sounded odd to me as well, but then I had to ask myself why a scam would choose to give themselves such an odd name for this part of the world. I, too, am curious about this position. |

Bizarre. The simple answer is to ring Jubail Industrial College and ask. It is beyond me why they would use a recruitment company based in Libya. |

The African Training Company is the product of a row between the the British and Libyan partners of Anglo Petroleum Training/Al Mawared, based in Libya.
Anglo Petroleum (APt) is now run by a Libyan lady. She regularly sacks her office staff, pays late and final payouts have been well short of what is owed. APt is a small company and I can think of 8 teachers who left before contract end in a 9 month period.
The African outfit is run by the former owner of APt. |

I work for the oil company that has been advertising long term positions in Libya on a 6 and 3 rotation and cracking salaries...see the ad on tefl.com
I'm ok. |

No offense, but 6 and 3 sucks. I am used to 4 and 4--much better |

Agreed! . 6 + 3??? That's ridiculous and an absolute ripoff!
I'm on 4 + 4 and that's pretty much standard for oil/gas work. All expats are on the same here, whatever their position/task.Do they provide complimentary handcuffs for the 6 weeks?
Seriously, anyone with a normal social/family life would reject out of hand a 6 and 3.I suppose it would be fine for those willing to sacrifice their sanity just for the sake of a few extra pounds or bucks.Kazakhstan is the best around without doubt.See my other posting. It combines a social life with excellent income and a standard rotation. |

You've mentioned Kazakhstan a few times. You've also mentioned, I believe, that jobs are word of mouth. Without some contact information, this doesn't do us much good. |

Well,I have taken the time and made a concious effort to get on with people I meet,to help them,to console them when they are feeling down,to appreciate their company, not to burn bridges with them and past employers;to keep in contact with people I have worked with over the years,to wish them a happy birthday and happy new year every year.I've learnt to be coperative, considerate, attentive and responsible with and to them.I enjoy meeting people. They appreciate what I do for them and I appreciate what they do for me.I just don't take.In fact,I probably give much more than I take.
Let me ask anyone who reads this posting. How many of you bothered to collect addresses, email addresses, phone numbers of your past colleagues and past emloyers even as far back as 15 or 20 years ago? How many of you have also kept these addresses and numbers? How many of you have even made an effort and taken the time to maintain contact these people after departing? How many of you have been in regular contact with them? How many of you have bothered to wish them a 'happy birthday' every year? How many of you have made an effort to meet up with them again when you have had a chance? How many of you have visited them in hospital when they were sick? How many of you have been invited to and attended their weddings even though you may have had to fly a few hundred miles, spent a couple of hundred bucks and taken time off to do so?How many of you have attended the funeral of an ex colleague's husband?
To get jobs through 'word of mouth',these are helpful ways to get them.
I have never 'asked for' any plum (or for that matter non-plum) job but people have offered them to me or recommended me for the job because they know they will not be let down and they will enjoy my company.
I am all for people making their own way in life. You choose the road you want to take;the one of coperation, responsibility, sympathy, consideration and kindness that opens up opportunities or the one of the contrary, along which you stumble;going from one pitiful job/situation to the next.Very early on I chose the former. ............. |

I have been doing such all of my life... networking was always crucial to my careers (both of them) and to my keeping current on this board. I don't think it is an unusual character trait in this field.
VS
(PS: it would certainly make your posts easier to read if you used the standard rule of putting a space after a period/fullstop and a comma. It is a rule for a reason... If you were my student, I wouldn't read it until you had done it properly. As an English teacher, you should know better.) |

I think ntropy was just hoping for a specific company name. I wouldn't mind either.
About the mechanics of writing, I agree. When typing a manuscript that's going to be printed out, I still do what was drilled into me decades ago in high school--two spaces after a period or a colon. Online it's really not a problem and also considerate to at least stick in a single space between sentences. |

Concerning mechanics of writing. Point taken. As my elementary school teacher used to write in reports:
"Must do better."
