Q: I already have one type of work visa, and now need to get a different type for a different line of work...does the new visa replace the first and leave it invalid, or I can still use both, potentially?

I'm sure for those who know about visas it's a dumb question, but..

It's one or the other. The new visa cancels the old. If you want to do both types of work you have to apply for "Permission to engage in activities other than those permitted by the current status" or something very similarly long-winded- check out the MOFA site for details.
