What I find astonishing on my now infrequent visits is that anyone would CHOOSE to live in the benighted land that the UK of GB & NI has become !

Would you want to live in a society that can produce monsters like Dr Harold Shipman ?

Oh, come on Guge - you have to admit that the cost of servants is so very high these days..

It's probably not a wind-up. He does take himself very seriously.

Why should it be a wind up ?

Don't you think that there must be aprofound malaise in a society where a doctor can murder more than 200 of his patients before anyone notices ? People are too obsessed with Beckham and the Spice Girls to see what is really going on ?

Sick. Sick. Sick.

Isn't this thread about as relevant to English language teaching as, say, Irish lineage or buying condoms in Baton Rouge?

It is all in the eye of the beholder. When I see those posts from people who want to come to the Land of Blair and do TEFL I wonder.

Am I crazy ? Or is it safe to assume that others are crazy and I am sane ?

I cannot see what are the attractions of coming to London for example and living on the pittance that you will get as an EFL teacher, but then I chose EFL so that I could escape from Britain !

Ah, hearteningly optimistic scot47, as ever Smile....

Most teachers who are already here seem to have recently returned from a stint abroad and are not quite sure what to do with themselves.. Suffice to say, they don't stay in ELT for long... They either get a real job or bugger off abroad again. There is, of course, also the staple number of weirdos...

I am (ahem) the notable exception, of course. I shall stay here till my degree is through (and Spanish is "bueno enough") - then Latin America shall feel my wrath.

Why on Earth any sane North American would want to come here is beyond me. Living in the same city as the Queen quickly gets dull (it's not like you bump into her at the pub), and most of our phone boxes aren't red.

Hi Scot,
I am glad that you have an opportunity to study justice with New Mexicos's finest.
In response to your question about Shipman. He was caught, a trial was set. He was treated humanely by the legal system. Not everyone is perfect nor every legal system. At least an effort was made to judge the man, to prove his guilt.

He was not just slapped into a holding facility on the say-so of some general or other.
Why would you want to live in a country that refuses to recognise the legal rights of human beings, some of them juveniles, currently incarcerated there without trial? how many are innocent? Will they ever get a real trial?

This sort of attitude and behaviour speaks reams to all of us and tarnishes the image of the "land of the free" but let's not get into the politics of it. Enjoy New Mexico.

OK, so we have established that the UK is a crap place to work as an EFL teacher, and that the nation has produced at least one doctor with a strange view medical ethics. So what? The same could be said for virtually every nation in western Europe.

I am British born of German extraction. The land of my fathers is similarly a miserable place for most EFL teachers to work, and a certain Dr Josef Mengele takes the biscuit for medical ethics.

If I had sufficient time on my hands, perhaps I would gate-crash the German discussion forum and point this out to them.

I would not choose to live in New Mexico either ! Or in any of the Staes of that blessed Union !

One of the things in favour of EFL is that you have an element of mobility of labour not avaialable to many.

The price can be permanent exile. Hey ho !

That's the second time Scot47 has been mistaken for Johnslat. It first happened about a year ago.

I am flattered that someone should think that I am johnslat.

Unlike John I have never been on the other side of the pond. I was born and remain a subject of Her Britannic Majesty Elizabeth.

johnslat is currently out of circulation - not in the pokey but at Police Academy.

I am in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - which I find a more congenial place than Her Majesty's Dominions.

Oh, how those public amputations and floggings (preceded by trial by "confession") must warm the cockles of the heart.
