I am 53, recently divorced, and have had a lot of trouble finding a job in California. I thought I had a good one but was laid off about three weeks ago. I have multiple degrees (bachelors in art, masters in political science and a JD, which is a law degree) but want a Cambridge or Trinity TEFL certification so I can get a good job overseas.

Given the global economic mess, is this a pipe dream at this point?

Also, are some schools offering these certifications better than others, both in terms of the course material and its value upon graduation?

And last: what certification, if any, would I have to get to teach English to attorneys?

Nope, you could do it. Might not save a lot though. As far as certs go, make sure it has 120 hours with 6 teaching students. That being said, the big ones are SIT, Trinity and CELTA

FOr teaching attorneys, your JD degree is your best bet on being a shoo in.

It sounds like we have alot in common. I am 47, divorced, also with several degrees including a JD. Fortunatley, I am still employed but that could change at anytime. If I do get laid off it will give me an excuse to do what I want to do anyway...teach Very Happy

I am affraid I can't offer you any advice since we are in a similar situation. I do wish you the best of luck though!

I am 52 and just starting a masters program in TESOL. I have a BA in History and an MBA. I taught for Outward Bound (outdoor education) for 20 years. I have a 20 year old TESL certificate and 6 months ESL teaching 15 years ago in Colombia. I am optimistic about my job prospects because I hope that by the time I am ready to teach again, the economy will be moving forward and my qualifications will make me a worthy candidate for a decent job.
