The latest from the powers on high is that hotel clubs are going to have to restrict admission to 'members' (just like the Sheraton used to in the old days.) I wonder what the criteria will be for members and how much it will cost. Maybe I won't be able to afford the occasional splurge on the Qube anymore. With the Rugby Club likely closing down, where will the Gulagers go?

And another long established watering hole, Garvey's is undergoing some sort of CID investigation? They were "raided" an hour before midnight on New Year's Eve and everyone had to leave.

Word is the Doha Sailing Club is also going to either have to move or shut down sometime in the future (but who knows when?)

Rydges was closed at Eid in December.

Presumably, the membership requirement (if it comes to pass) is to try and restrict either by nationality or religion, or both, rather than trying to stop people entering at the door - requesting the membership card (for which they will have to complete an application and presumably give a copy of their passport) will make it "easier" for the doormen to refuse entry.

Poor old Oasis. I used to live in an apartment nearby within walking distance. Many a happy evening was spent there. An end to an era.

Too right. I liked the place myself. Especially Thursday evenings. Lots of young lovelies (and not so young lovelies) used to hang out there.


Too bad about Garvey's. With all these new licensing regulations someone from the local municipality forgot (conveniently???) to inform the Garvey Bros that they needed to apply for a new licence for the premises. So everybody got tossed about around 11.00 p.m. with nowhere else to go. It was not an auspicious start to the New Year. Luckily I was at a private do, so we partied till 3.00 but had to be on the job at 6.30 a.m. A lot of red-eyed people at work!!!!!

Some of the Garvey's staff sent to the lock up for 10 days. Still not open for business. Something going on.

The explanation for the whole mess was in today's Gulf Times. Somebody didn't apply for a liquor licence. They certainly turned a blind eye for years. So now the place is dry. The Oasis is gone, Rydges is gone, the Rugby Club (who knows?) - where will we be able to indulge our taste for cheap brew?

Garvey's is still out of commission for eats and drinks. Gulagers are getting ancy as it along with the Rugby Club, it offered the best deals in town. Actually the food is pretty good too, some great Sri Lankan cooks who do a mean curry.

I was in Doha for 3 years at QAC and then QP direct hire. I was glad to get out. I got on with lots of people and didn't get on with lots of people. Found it all a bit odd looking back. People came and went so often it was all a bit transient. I'm still in touch with a few though and have had meetups etc.

So...now lots of bars are shutting or at least some of the cheaper options....what the hell do people do there?

It's easy to blow money not having a very good time in Doha.

The hotel bars are alive and well because that's where the big bucks are made. It's the little places like Garvey's and thge Rugby club where you can buy a cheapo beer and good company that are threatened. If you have lots of money, you can hang out at the Sheraton or the Qube but for lowly paid teachers, this is not an option most of the time.

Things definitely do not look good for Garveys. The bar is still closed. All the guys on the base (regulars) don't have too many other places where they're welcome. They also don't have the bucks to pay for the expensive places. Too bad. I've met some nice army types out there. Good fun and let you know what's what in the camp.

The Sailing Club may be the next to go. The gov't wants the beach. Another landmark institution and watering hole going down, down, down.

I'm gonna just have to stay at home and drown my sorrows there.

It looks like Garvey's may never get their liquor licence. A real shame
for the regulars.
