Apparently the rules for visas have changed.
If you fly into the country from a western country, you get a 30 day tourist visa.
But, if you do a visa run to a nearby country, they will give you a 15 day visa.
So, for all of you working on a tourist visa, you are going to have to do a visa run twice a month.
Don't you just love Thailand?!? |

Do you think it could relate to the fact that it is illegal to be working on a tourist visa and that Thai authorities may be making it more difficult for those "tourists" that are?
I've heard that having a work permit means you don't have to leave the country for a year.
This sure seems to beat the time and expense of having to do 24 border runs during the same period. |

Mr. laconic, most people working in Thailand are allowed by their schools to work on a tourist visa. A lot of times schools allow this because the school itself has trouble dealing with the "authorities". My previous message was for their benefit/information. Your reply, although true in theory, misrepresents the intent of my message. You should not reply in these forums unless you have thought through the question a little. |

Yes, what some schools permit and what is legal can be two different things. Hopefully, you are not saying that just because a school permits something makes that something legal. Or are you saying that?
What I posted is not theory. There are teachers in Thailand who work on the proper visa and have a work permit and who do not have to leave the country every month, 2 weeks or whatever schedule they now find themselves having to adhere to only because they will or cannot get legal.
There was no question in your posting so it was hard to think it through but I did think through your encouraging people to work on a tourist visa and that is what I responded to.
If it appears that I don't agree with people teaching illegally in Thailand, then you are capturing the essence of what I wrote. |
