Today I went to the PSB to renew my residence permit. We were informed that new regulations require special documentation in order for the PSB to issue RPs for longer than 6 months. We were given a choice of either returning to our school and securing the new necessary documentation or receiving an RP for just 6 months, even though the contract and FEC are for one year. Of course this means that should I decide to complete a second term, a new RP must be obtained.
This was news to the FAO. I didn't catch all [ok, most] of what was being said. He said that the new requirements mean that even the principal of our school is required to go to his boss in order to have an FT for longer than six months. This may be a lie.
Another matter recently confirmed by a friend connected with the FEO is that without gaunxi foreigners must leave China after 5 years. They may return after six months. I had heard that it was nine years in the past. What's the word on the street? |

i think that 5 years is about right if you are a foreign expert. there's a thread on here somewhere that discusses the foreign experts regulations. there in fact is a sort of regulation that you're talking about. however, this is china and it seemingly applies somewhere and doesn't elsewhere. or, if you are inconvenient to your employer (forgive my language there), he/she might exercise that exact clause in the regulations there.
i hope i won't get into this kinda problem in a few, but if i do...i'll go to another location...lucky for me, i haven't bought a property in this country yet, but i have a family (chinese wife and son)...can get an L as a family member
my take is that these regulations are simply to control us everywhere. chinese authorities are notorious control freaks on one hand but completely ignorant on the other...go figure that one
cheers and beers to china that i will never understand |

Unfortunately Bureaus are living organisms theat never wish to relinquish powers, only get more. The 5 yr regulation does exist. I have seen it applied once in 7 years.
Several teachers got the same 6 month RP. Money making scheme by the PSB? Makes no sense |

I think the 5 years thing depends on who you work for. At the International School I worked at in Dalian, there were several people, some ESLers, some 'proper' teachers, who had been there for 7-10 years, presumably because the school had the wherewithall to continue renewing their visas. |

Been here 14 years - never been asked to leave China - never had to re-apply for a visa in my home country. My Z visa (in years gone by) and my RP have always been renewed in Tianjin (first seven years) and Beijing (second seven years).
I've never seen or heard of the rule being applied. |

I've been teaching in China for 8 years now and I am yet to experience this "rule".
My experience in Chinese universities has included working in Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Hubei provinces, and for the past two years in Beijing. |

Until I see it in Chinese, then I don't believe it is a law and even then I am skeptical and rather hesitant about its administration. After all of the Olympic shenanigans, where I disproved and proved many rumors wrong in my own personal experiences with the PSB, I don't believe anything until its in writing or I am turned down multiple times by multiple officers. Problem is, it takes alot of time and patience to get to that point, which most of us don't have to begin with. |

yes, yes, yes..and i've been here for 8 years too, although i have only worked for one employer for not full five years before..now, it's 4 years and my 5th year's coming...but it's also not continuous 'cause i've got a couple of months of an F visa in between thoughout those last 4 years
what i am saying is that one has to work for full 5 years to be "alledgable"
and keep in mind it's just an option for your employers
cheers and beers to no such options of employers |
