Then you're behind the times, Effat has recently been upgraded to a university. I'm not sure about Dar Al Hekmah.
Nice try, however. |

No need to be defensive and derisive. I didn't say you were wrong, just that I didn't know any women-only universities.
If I am behind the times, so is Effat College; their website still calls it a college, and there is no news release saying it is a university now.
OK, so let's say Effat is one of the several, as you said. Which others are there, in KSA and other Gulf countries? |

You seem terribly interested in this topic. May I therefore suggest you do your own research on Zayed University and the like? |

Well, according to this site, Saudi Arabia a Number One:
"Saudi Arabia is the country with the lowest rate of female representation in the work force worldwide, Princess Adla, daughter of King Abdullah, a guardian of the two mosques, said, explaining that the half million employed Saudi women represent only 5.5% of the local work force. And not only that. Despite the new opening in terms of professions and jobs, the unemployment rate among the Saudi women keeps growing. Speaking at a forum dedicated to the women in the economy and society, the Princess also illustrated the marginal role played by women in the economy of the kingdom: boasting total financial assets of 100 billion reals (17.5 billion euro), a little more than 40% generated from investments in projects."

Yes, I am. I hope that is OK.
Zayed University? Well, you should have told me it was a women-only university before I sent them my application last year!
Problem is, I have done my research, and I did not find any women-only universities in the KSA or the other Gulf countries. I found a few women-only colleges, but not several women-only universities. In fact, none.
So please enlighten us and name a few of the several. You were quick to make the statement "There are already several women-only universities in KSA and other Gulf countries", but you can't name a single one.
Furthermore, this new proposed university in KSA is being billed as the "first women-only" university in KSA, so seems like even the media doesn't know that Effat is a university now (Effat doesn't know as well, as per their website).
So please, name a few. I am curious. |

I'll bow to your superior research skills here, so do tell me if Zayed is now accepting male students? I know that when it was opened several years ago, it was definately women-only, although like other such institutions in the UAE, it always employed male teachers.

I suppose the very senior staff member who personally informed me that Effat's status as a university had been confirmed, and they were only awaiting the signature of the King, also doesn't know what she's talking about.
But, please continue with your attempts to score points through pedantry. Whatever floats your boat, so to speak... |

Perhaps this is what may be causing some confusion:
"I have no idea why I got so emotional reading this. i actually got all teary eyed! Saudi may be late but when they do it - they do it up, mashaAllah. One thing Id like to point out is that there are already colleges and Universities here for women, but they are branches. This will be the first exclusively girls University - mashaallah!"

Thanks for the clarification about ZU, I admit my wrong information.
So now we have slowly, but steadily, reached 2 women-only unis in the Gulf.

Pedantry?
I will tell you what: If 2 = several, then you = a nice person.
Fact of the matter is, you are being yourself: obtuse for the sake of being obtuse. You claimed there are are SEVERAL women-only universities in the Gulf, but couldn't name a single one of your own accord. Begrudgingly, two names have been dragged out of you. Perhaps there are more, perhaps there aren't. But surely, if there were more, it would have taken you 10 seconds to name a few. But no. Why are you so uptight, defensive, and paranoid? Will it make you less of Cleopatra if you named a few of the alleged several? I guess it would, 'cause it would make you a nicer person. Lord have mercy.

How did I know this was all about me? Trap takes precious time out from his fulfilling family life because he's genuinely interested in just how many female only universities there are in the Gulf? Nah, I didn't think so either... |

Just as I thought.
Have fun spreading lies... "several women-only universities" in the Gulf. Suddenly, all but 1 got vapourized! Perhaps they were all bombed by Israel |

Part of the problem here is the definition of "women only university." Zayed University has always been women only (though with a mixed staff). What about the fact that UAEU and QU are split into separately male and female branches? What about places in Saudi like PSU and Al-Yamamah which have separate branches?
In my definition, I would consider all of those to be existing women-only universities.
Another problem that one sees repeatedly in any new release in the Middle East is that everything seems to have to be declared to be the first or the biggest or the highest or whatever... a lot of extreme cultural insecurity reflected in these stories.

I hope my thread wont get locked or exterminated because of how many women-only universities are in the Magic Kingdom!
Well, statistically and socially speaking, both of you are wrong!
First, you need to define what you mean by women-only university? Then, we can discuss the matter further.
Now the ball is at you camp! Joggle! |

Not here. The Queen clearly differentiated between the two:
| Quote: |
| There are already several women-only universities in KSA and other Gulf countries, and in any case all universities in KSA are strictly gender segregated. |
She just doesn't want to name them, lest she is accused of being nice and sensible |

So trap, answer me this.
If, instead of saying 'several women only universities" I had said, "2 women only universities" or 'several women only colleges" or 'several universities with separate branches for men and women", would it have made the slightest difference to the substance of my post? If yes, could you explain it - you do seem to have a lot of time on your hands, so I'm sure you won't begrudge it. |
