This has been a bad day. |
Oh, dixie dear, I'm sorry you had such an exasperating evening.
Could you explain what you meant by tiny babies spending the day without their mothers? |

Well I have to go to IMSS and jump through all these hoops as they are the ones who pay my maternity leave - the entire 84 days! Half of which (42 days) come prior to the birth, with the others coming after (at least based on when I am due...and I suspect I will be late seeing how it is my first baby). So, when I return to work my baby will be a month and half old - at best.
Sorry to b*tch but the BF can only take so much! |

To the other extreme, in Canada new moms apparently now get a YEAR off work on maternity benefits. |

IMSS maternity leave is pathetic. It's my opinion they are trying to entice mothers to quit their jobs there for lossing benefits in turn cutting costs for IMSS. They wouldn't agree to let me start mine early "because there was no indication I would deliver early" then not 5 minutes later in the same appointment the dr said, "You need these steriod shots because you will probably deliver early." So I was off work for 5 days before I delivered. BUT the upside is they did PAY me the full 3 months worth of pay! Even though I was only off the uni's payroll for 7 weeks.
This is also why I planned to take a sabbatical starting the day after my maternity leave ended--I'm sorry every mom isn't so lucky. |

After spending three hours at an IMMS yesterday, it was evident there is lots of room to cut costs, in administration and red tape and not on benefits. To elaborate on Dixie's comment, IMSS requires an expectant mother to complete lab tests and various other procedures at IMSS before they will complete the paperwork to get your maternity leave. So, if you have a prvate doc and hospital and are getting your tests done elsewhere and you're going to IMSS strictly to fulfill the paperwork to get your maternity leave, you're forced to double up on all the tests. Right there is a spot you could save quite a bit for the Mexican tax payer. I don't understand why they can't use the existing results in an IMSS file.
I suspect the procedures are rigid due to union resistance. |

Dixie,
Do you still have my friend's number? It was on the bag of clothes. Why don't you give her a call, or would you like me to ask her to call you?
Melee,
I'm sure you posted, or said once that you got the IMSS doc to just approve what your other doc said and there was no need to re-take tests. Is that right or am I dreaming? Maybe Dixie could do the same thing?
Sorry you're having a crappy time Dixie. If you ever want to come around for a cup of herbal tea and a whinge just let me know.

How many countless other government offices, banks, etc. might this apply to? It's not that noticeable until you actually get caught up in and strangled by it! Then we go "Whoa! People do this every day and nobody complains and nothing changes??" Mexicans are a very patient lot (except when driving). |

No doubt and not just in Mexico. Canadians are well aware of the pains (and joys of course) or Canadian socialized health care.

We specifically asked...no go. The doc gave us a look and a smirk and stated 'estos son las normas'. I was looking for a hint on him to indicate he wanted a bribe but never saw it. I'll admit we were frustrated almost enough to consider greasing some palms.
Sorry...I'll let Dixie respond... |

Loz, (and indirectly Guy and dixie)
I think I benefited in that respect because of the small town where everything is more relaxed, and the doctor who was already nortorious for trying to do as little work as possible. |

I decided to perhaps not be mute on my own post. Guy and Dixie: Are you suuuuuuuuuuure? Have you talked to Mexican working woman who have been there done that? That does sound strange, Dixie, about not seeing anyone of your financial status in the IMSS waiting room. And running the same tests twice? Ouch! Why not interchanging them? One test with IMSS and one test with VRIM (or whatever insurance you are using?)
I don't have to worry about it, because I am just giving my own private classes and thus have no benefits.
If we stay here in Mexico, I will be a stay at home mom anyway or continue giving private classes. |
