Being back in the US for a few months has helped me to see that customer service workers are a bit more "human." You can have some real conversations during the transactions. Unfortunately the "human" thing also includes the nasty teenagers and the "I'm arguing with my boyfriend while ringing you up"-type cashiers.
In my 5 years in Japan, I had all the above experiences. Cashier giving my change to my Japanese GF, the look of terror when I asked the waitress to hold the tomatoes (please).
And, overall, I much prefer the "polite robot" approach. I am going back to Japan this April and I can't wait to deal with bowing, polite Japanese cashiers again. My uniform fetish has been rather understimulated lately. |
