Hi All

I'm planning on teaching in Mexico City in September as I guess it's a decent time to look for work. I'm Irish and in Madrid at the moment. I hope I've got decent enough Spanish by September.

Ok, I know nothing about Mexico except that it's huge. Can anyone tell me some good sites to look for jobs and what is an acceptable wage?

How much should I pay for a place rent wise? I mean an average place in a good area.

I should have close to a years experience teaching once I arrive. I have a degree in Computer Science and my TEFL cert.

To anyone replying, I thank you in advance and I hope to meet some of you guys later in the year.

September will be a little late in the Universities and those kinds of schools but... I would think you could probably find hours teaching some kind of technology courses.

Since I'm up north though, I expect Guy or one of the other chilangos will be able to help with more specifics.

As for pay... With a BA and a cert and a year's experience you shouldn't have to take less than ummmmm 12k per month? (too low for mexico city?)

September is late? Wow, I thought that would have been the perfect time. So when is a good time. I haven't booked the flights yet but I'm going to in the next few weeks.

Do you think August is the time to go? I thought everything kicked off in teaching in either September or January.

Primary and secondary schools start in August, but the OP didn't mention the type of teaching work he/she was seeking. If you're looking at teaching adults, at a language school or in a business EFL setting, then you can find job starts year round, with the exception of right before Christmas or during April (big Easter break).

As for an acceptable wage, 7000 pesos is the break-even point I usually quote, so anything above that and you have fun money or can start to save. Rent depends a lot on what you want. You can get a furnished room for as little as 1000 pesos a month, though in the upscale areas that can go up to 3000. A fully furnished apartment can go for anything from 3000 to 25000 pesos a month, with the higher end in the visiting executive class.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a ticket to D.F. with a June 7th arrival date.
I would like to find a job in a college or preparatory school. Am I waiting too late to find one for the Fall semester?

I would start emailing schools now if you can. The admin at my place were out of town last week doing the job fair circuit looking to hire. Not all schools go abroad though to look for staff but most schools are looking to get their hiring completed now. Of course, that doesn't always happen and even if it does, there are often vacancies because people don't show up or need to back out for whatever reason.

I P.M.'ed you, if you'd like to share information about your school. Wink
