Dear Shonai Ben,
Today you play; tomorrow you pay. But I hope you prove to be the exception to the rule.
Regards,
John

Age is irrelevant. .

No longer true I'm afraid. There is now a 60 year old limit placed on new Uni recruitment of foreign teachers in our province. This is imposed when your school applies for the FEC

Taiwan is getting harder to find jobs for people over 50, most of the jobs here are kinder or grade school and management doesnt think that kids will respond well to people over 50. If you have a Masters you can still get work in a Uni here or do privates.

From what I have heard Vietnam has decent pay and teachers over 50 are seen as experienced and valued by society.

best wishes

John,

If these women were truely gold diggers I doubt that they would be dating/marrying English teachers. I could be wrong.

More likely they are looking for a comfortable lifestyle. I don't blame them. Go look at some of these ladies apartments and you will see why they will marry an old guy just for his teacher's salary.

Just got this appropriate joke in the mail today.

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young lady at his side.
He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring.
The old man said, 'No, I'd like to see something more special.'
At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. 'Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000,' the jeweler said.
The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, 'We'll take it.'
The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, 'by check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now, and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon,' he said.
Monday morning, the jeweler phoned the old man. 'There's no money in that account.'
'I know,' said the old man, 'But let me tell you about my weekend!'

It is really hard to even get a job over 45 and I don't understand why that is in the ESL industry.

It's not true in EVERY ESL context, Julieanne. The majority of the teaching staff at the university Language Centre where I work is over 45. Including myself Shocked

I don't think I'm the only regular here on Dave's who is still happily teaching away after 45, either!

Without a teacher's license or Master's it probably is not that easy to get a job if you are over 45. Well I believe that in China they still take about anyone. Excluding people over 60.

Toughen up. (No kidding.) Be secure within yourself; that has to be enough.

I agree, that China's good for age-- I'm 60. But do be sure that you're going to get paid, wherever you go. Before the revolution got heavy in Nepal, that was the best place I'd found w/ exceptionally respectful, curious students. My oral classes for 10 year olds loved chanting poetry, tiny kids would do yogasanas and memorize new "direction" words; college kids wanted to know about Sartre, business Eng classes would huddle in closet-sized rooms to learn how to speak English.
