2 years ago I completed a TESOL (TEFL) qualification which included an inclass component and 2 modules - english for children & english for adults. I plan on completing business english and any other modules which would get me a CERT IV qualification.

I have been assessing which job markets I could possibly work in... I want to work in eastern europe. I am 26, male, with a croatian background and reside in Australia.

I am considering Russia because I am intrigued by their culture and really want to experience a cold climate for a change. The plan trip from here to Russia costs approximately $1700 USD which is fine.

Now... how do I go about getting a job over there? do I travel there first and look for a job in person? or should I apply from Australia?

Are the big franchise centres like EF worth considering? I have heard negative things about them. Which company would be best for a first timer?

I have been learning Russian too... and if things go well there I might be open to living there... if I can meet a russian woman that is.. and I think I can get a dual citizenship because my dad was born in Croatia?

I do not have a university degree but am considering completing it online. Is a university degree necessary before travelling to Russia?

and does a uni degree make that much difference in terms of pay? most degrees are a 3 year investment of my time... soo... is it worth getting or not? I don't want to complete a university degree only to find out it was not worthwhile. I have been to university before and I am well educated.. just haven't completed my course though.

oh and I have been learning Russian too..

I found this link on gaining Croat citizenship, and the answer to your question there, is yes that should be possible.

http://www.coe.int/t/e/legal_affairs/legal_co-operation/foreigners_and_citizens/nationality/documents/national_legislation/Croatia-The%20Law%20on%20Croatian%20Citizenship.asp

However regarding your desire to go to Russia to chase marriageable women.....I have no respect for expats who exploit women. Even "well educated" ones. Evil or Very Mad

I don't plan on exploiting women but the fact is when you get married to a russian I hear it makes the job process 10x easier. Secondly, they show more interest in me than I do with them.

I am not interested in spending $5000 just to get myself established there for 6-12 months then being forced to leave with $0.. I don't see any point in dedicating yourself to learning a new language for a year then never using it again.

Also... Missy.... women do exploit men too... particularly older ones.

So wanting to get married is an awful thing to do generally, or in Russia? Generally, marriages are affection or a transaction or a mixture of both. One assumes that the woman gets a choice in the matter.

Absolutely.. I think her opinion is reflective of most american women.
I don't waste my time with them... as most are after a guys wallet anyway. (american women that is)

Hi lucifer911

Good luck with your plans. In answer to your question, I think you are better off going in with any of the franchise schools to get your feet on the ground. Yes, all the terrible things you heard have a lot of substance to them, but they are still the best option for entering Russia. (They know this too, that's why they exploit with impunity.) BKC is marginally better than EF, I think, but I'm not sure who is recruiting at the moment, what with the crisis etc. In any case, leave them after a contract.

Re wallets and women, Russian gals are pretty good at spending your hard-earned as well! Wink

Being a foreigner will get you lots of attention from Russian women. Not necessarily for the right reasons. Does it make the job process easier? I don't think so. At least not until you can get residency, and that takes a while.

Most places will ask that you have a degree. However, that shouldn't stop you from trying; if they need you they'll find a way to get you the job.

Being married will only help you in the process to getting residency. As was mentioned, this takes years (at least one year for temporary residency, and another year after that just to apply for permanent residency) to do. Now, if you want to go through a marriage just to get residency, that's your own perogative; I mean, there are many girls here who'd get married to an American, say, just to get her green card (and summarily ditch their 'husband'). But be warned that it's not a short process, and you need to stay married for that whole time; also, you need to have a residence at which you can be registered that whole time as well.

Good luck.

In Russia, men are generally expected to pay for everything, whether you're on a date or married. There are gold-diggers everywhere, and they are well-represented here in Russia.
If I were to give you advice, I'd say that it'd be a good idea to come and work/live in Russia for a year or two before taking the leap to residency/marriage. This is not the easiest country in which to live, and living here is much different than visiting.

Hey expatella, if you had a Russian boyfriend/husband, would you be "exploiting" him? Or would he be "exploiting" you? Or just what?

good point

I think russian women are smart enough to make decisions for themselves. I sense a double standard thing happening.. and even if you go to a different country as a male looking for love so what? it makes a much more interesting story than say meeting the girl next door.

It takes 2 to tango.

Please read my Cautionary Tale about English First and then make an informed choice as to whether or not you want to work for them.

Although the head office has received the same document I posted on this site, they have not even bothered to acknowledge it!

Watch your back!!

Russian women will chew you up & spit you out!

Any westerner going there with a 'player' hat on will soon be sussed out & drained of any money or dignity they might have Very Happy

I love and respect Russian women for that very reason!!!
