The new management of Com-Com in Shenzhen, a one-time respected ESl training center with a 10 year history and 3 branches, apparently decided that funds earmarked for payroll could be better resourced pursuing other ends. Teachers and staff have not been paid for almost 3 months as of now (2-17-09), and the school has been aloof and non-responsive to concerns voiced by confused and stressed-out employees. I can't understand why those poor souls are continuing to report for duty (no kidding, they are!), perhaps because they naively believe the company will at some point make up for back wages? Ha Ha Ha!! Don't work at this school! And don't teach English in China without a Z visa! If you teach with a tourist or business visa you are working illegally and are subject to immediate deportation (it has happened to many). Plus, you won't have a legal basis for recourse in the event your contract terms are violated or you are not paid!--A point of law that many unethical schools are happily exploiting now.

here's my guess. they came here with no savings and noone back home can wire them the funds necessary to get themselves out of the slavery they find themselves in.

this kind of story pops up at least once or twice a year. warning to anyone wanting to come to china - make sure you have enough money on hand to get out if you need to.

I'm very mad now because of you. You come to my country and try to help them with their broken spoken skills. How would you change things in the Chinese EFL system?

The thing about "you people" that disturbs me is the blatant racism inherent in such a bold statement. I applaud it. I wonder when it will entertain me?

When will you people come and save our system?

Our system has been around for 5 thousand years; we are the epitome of efficiency. If you decide to invest in our country we will be eternally grateful.

Of course, you could always go to our southern neighbors - Thailand, Vietnam and perhaps Singapore? The only problem with Singapore is that they like whips and don't seem like a nice place to visit. So, wher should I go? Whatever happened to the bike rider TP or something like that?

Life is strange. Get a job that suits you and you'll find wonders. I wonder what is around the next river bend? You might end up the King of the World?

Good Luck.

I wonder about the future of baseball in China. I have a former student who contacts me annually about games in Shanghai. I wonder if they have a league that includes HK, Taiwan, SK, JP, Russia nd Australia. That would be an interesting international league.

Contract law in china does not bear this out to be true.....Chinese law indicates no matter what language or what relationship the parties have to the legality of abilities to work for a particular employer, a contact is a contract....and is valid if the language is contractualy worded...I often wonder where posters get their "points of law"..

I think his point is. without a legal work visa, a contract is not enforceable. N'est pas?
He was sort of...how do you say it..."belaboring the obvious?" Wink
I feel bad for the people who are not getting their money. But.... someone who works here illegally is just asking for trouble. Not everyone is out to cheat you here..but why invite it?

I guess you guys are all together. What a relief? We got gramps and a freak leading us now.

Obama is an abomination of the sanctity of our race. How could they let someone of his stature undertake a position of authority? How do Americans live with themselves knowing the atrocity they have unleashed on a poor, impressionable developing world?

Perhaps now the masses will arise and smell the roses of a distinct protectioness flavor.

I got burned in this deal, too.

I taught a part-time corporate class for COM-COM English in Shenzhen and still haven't received my salary for December.

The worst part for me is how one of the owner-managers, a Chinese American who personally recruited me to take the job, never returned a single one of my calls and emails for an apology or explanation.

This dodging chiseler completely ignored me, never giving me the time of day after the payroll freeze. As far as I know, most of the teachers and staff who stayed on after not getting paid were Chinese, not foreigners.

I seriously doubt I'll ever see a single renminbi of the 4,500 this company owes me. I doubt COM-COM English, which is now beneath the crushing weight of the worldwide economic crisis, is going to make it.

One of the Chinese teachers I worked with (she taught the beginner class the same evenings I did the intermediate) told me today that she still hasn't been paid her back wages.

She's still getting the same runaround, the same excuses from the company's owners and managers who continue taking money from students and putting it into their personal bank accounts while Chinese workers like her keep getting the shaft.

STAY AWAY FROM COM-COM ENGLISH!!!

I worked for Com Com when I first came to SZ four years ago. They were better organized than most. They paid on time and in full.

I was surprised to hear of their current difficulties, but I was told that at one point they were spending 850,000RMB a month on marketing so it is not a huge shock.

The Nanshan branch in Bao Li Da Sha has indeed closed or moved. I am not sure. I just walked by thier new location. It is behind Hai Ya supermarket, upstairs of Hot Yogz facing Book City.

It seems to be a great spot, but in the last year Meten, Wall Street, Web and Advanced Training Solutions have all opened up in the same area. I am not sure what the future holds.

It is really confusing to think that they would screw over their teachers, just to reinvest in a different location.
