Does anybody have experience of teaching English in Cape Town? Is it true that it's quite difficult to find paid work there?

I'm from Cape Town currently working in Vietnam. I know of several schools that are often looking for teachers in Cape Town (Shane, Good Hope Studies) and I know there are a number of other schools. The pay isn't great but it's enough. And Cape Town is the most awesome city on the planet! Very Happy

Hi Owly jr, thanks for you response! It's great to hear that there are some schools looking for teachers in Cape Town. Do you think it would be worth me sending off some speculative applications?

How are you finding Vietnam? To be honest, I've been debating between moving to Thailand and moving to Cape Town. I'm not expecting to make big bucks either way, just enough to live off.

There are many language schools in Cape Town. Some of them employ foreign teachers with the right paperwork. If you have a study permit you can work legally for a maximum of 20 hours a week. If you can get a work permit, you're set. None of the schools will assist you in getting your work permit so you're on your own there. Sad

Pay maxes out at about 1000 US monthly with no benefits for CELTA-qualified degree holders. That's not bad if you don't mind living like a middle-class student Laughing . Nothing wrong with that of course.

Cape Town will be a great experience if you can get work here!
