I am glad to hear that things worked out and that our fears did not come true. You are one of the lucky few. I do wonder what your agent would of done if you did not approach her looking for your money. Go out and have a good meal there. |

Just send a message to the powers that be that you cannot teach because you are too weak from hunger. Be apologetic. Explain you are sorry you need wages to eat so you can teach.
It's non confrontational and makes the same point. And it loses them face. |

God another one.. Listen, you're kinda stupid to not have done enough research before you went to China.. I don't feel bad for you.. For everyone else weeping for this person, I say get a damn life.. When you travel to another contry.. in this case another planet, there is an obligatory amount of research and due diligence that needs to be done.. If you can't figure out what is acceptable and what is not and if you accept less than the status quo than you need to eat what you excrete.. Do you understand that?
So please.. Save your SOB story for your next life where whatever religion you believe in determines your emotional bailout.. I for one am not interested in hearing about, or reading about how you stepped in dog shit... If you didnt plan your life to have an element of contingency, then you really need to eat your lack of planing and stop annoying those of us who did plan..
Please disappear.. |

You said you aren't interested in reading about how I stepped in dog shit, yet you not only got on your knees and sniffed the shit I stepped in, but smeared it allover your face by wasting your time replying and picking a fight with me. Does some of the emotional trauma you repressed as a child feel released now that you fufilled your chance to see what its like to act like an *beep* and be able to hide behind a keyboard and screen from any repercussions? I have no respect for trolls like you, nobody talks like that to my face, and the fact some weak pos tries to on the internet is kind of annoying. |

Glad it worked out for you, Sly22. It seems like you got some good suggestions as well as other ones.
To future China FTs: yes you should research as much as possible, but nothing is certain. Is finding a job that's right for you and works out great certain in your country? Have back up funds or credit just in case you end up in a bad situation that can't be resolved as Sly22 was able to do. If you are unqualified or marginally qualified you have a bigger risk of getting taken advantage of. |

Sly, You were extremely lucky. How far will you let your pay get in arrears next time? |

On meeting my agent I explained to her I would come to the office personally on the first monday of each month to pick up my pay. If its waiting for me I go to class, If for some reason its not I don't. She was fine with this and said there would be no further delays. (she did pay me every month on the 1st for the past 2 years with no problems, which is why this time I was suprised she took so long)
Thanks for the kind words all. I feel much more confident now with enough money in my pocket for a plane ticket out and money to survive till I find another job. My priority now is to save for the next few months for this kind of emergency fund. I'm horrible at saving money but It needs to be done. |

Well played Sly and thanks for sharing the story.
Parts in bold make good advice: don't let your guard down too much, be prepared for emergencies, and the China ride will be a lot smoother, regardless of what bumps come up. |

Sly, Thanks for bringing this story to its conclusion. Glad it turned out well for you. Most of us are not willing to expose ourselves to abuse from those who should be supporting us. A lot of good lessons in this story. |

The placement company I work for hasn't paid me since the beginning of December. I was due to get paid on January 1st but my agent wouldn't answer her phone or respond to my messages until the 20th, she wanted to renew my passport and visa and assured everything was fine. I showed up to sign the new contract as she assured me I would get paid right after Chinese New year. I've gone back to work now and been calling her every day and sending her messages since new year ended and she never picks up or returns my calls. I'm starting to think I'm never going to get paid and I'm not really sure what the best way to go about this is. I was thinking of explaining this to the school I work at, but knowing how helpful they can be I'm sure they would rather complain to the company and just get them to replace me instead of trying to help. |

Gee sly, you could have told us you've been working for this company for 2+ years to start off with and gave us a bit more background info from the start. Most of seemed to assume you were new to the job/agency and you were on the verge of destitution. We were treating you/advising you as if you'd just gotten off the plane two months ago! |
