Hi all,

I am finishing my contract in HK this July and I'm interested in doing a summer teaching programme on my way back home. I will apply to some in Hong Kong, but I was also wondering if there are any in other countries that hire internationally for the summer period.

I am willing to go most places, but I would prefer those that pay pretty well, as I will be getting double pay for those months (i.e. my current employer will still pay me until mid-August) and want to make the most of it.

A little info:
- Bachelor's degree and PGDE holder
- 3.5 years' primary school classroom experience, 1 year language school experience and 6 months' kindergarten experience
- Crappy online TEFL cert holder

I know I'm probably dreaming and it won't be feasible to go OS for such a short period and still make it worthwhile financially, but if anyone knows of any good options, I'd be glad to hear about them.

Nick

Not sure that's something I'd be crowing about in these times! (I'd also have thought that if you're already getting paid you might consider a post that doesn't pay particularly well!) Anyway, IMHO your best chance would be to stick around in HK.

Not crowing, Marco, just worried about returning to Oz with no money. As you know, the money's good in HK, and I know I'll be struggling a lot more when I go home. Nothing wrong with trying to save some extra before heading back to high-rent Recessionville.

Fair play! But why head back to Oz in these desperate times?

Why go home? Family, friends, something different. I want to get more experience in an Aussie school before heading OS again. Also, it has been four years, and while I love HK, it's not going to ever be my permanent home. I could stay here for years and have a very nice life, but I feel like I'd only be staying would be for the money/lifestyle. There are other places to go, friends to reconnect with and beaches to revisit. Until the next trip, that is. So, I guess this summer school thing is my last ditch effort to make some coin while I still can!

Understood. We're probably at different stages in life. I've already done a fair amount of 'risk-taking' (travel, etc.), and spent much of my adult life at home (ie. in the UK), though I've now been in Asia for 11 years, nine of them in HK. I don't love HK, I like it, but returning to the UK under the present circumstances would be insanity for me - apart from seeing family and friends I'd have little or nothing to gain - and I see quite a lot of them on annual trips back home in any case.

Back to your OP, my guess is you'll find a decent summer number here in HK.

Try a six week contract with Aston. You will get 12,000RMB and an apartment. Also you might be able to get a contract in Chengdu, so your travel expenses should not be much from Hong Kong.
