a) what schools are good and which ones should be avoided. (TEFL training schools)
b) What type of discipline problems are there in the classrooms?
2) CR living questions:
a) SCORPIONS I would like to hear if you encounter them.
b) Bullet Ants
and yes, I am being a sissy. |

Hi Yankee. I don't know if you've already done it but grab a cup of coffee and read through the forums. It's very educational and will answer, in part, some of your questions.
Good and bad schools - I went to the one in Quepos/Manuel Antonio and it was great. I've heard it's gone down the drain since then though. There's a couple in San Jose, one which is supposed to be good and one which is supposed to be bad. I don't remember names though.
Discipline problems depends on whether you are working in a private or public school. If you are working in a private English school, normally there will be no discipline problems except for teenagers and kids being forced to go there by their parents, but they are easy to handle with interactive activities such as games.
Scorpions exist, but good luck finding one in your shoe in the San Jose area.
Bullet ants I've never heard of. There are lots of ants though. |

Hi,
You will find scorpions and bullet ants in the jungle. The good news is that the scorpions like to hide in dark places-although we did find one in the bathtub. Just wear shoes when you go walking. Bullet ants are in trees, so just don't lean on them, or climb them. They are big and black and you can't miss them. They are called hormigas. I've never seen any in the San Jose area, tho. Oh, and leaf cutter ants. They crawl on the ground in a line like most ants do, and they carry leaves. Just don't interfere with them and they won't bother you. They will pinch and hold on if you mess with them--natives use them for stitches when they get a bad cut. |
