Is not "drinking the Kool Aid" a reference to the mass suicide at Jonestown years back? If so, how can you drink it and then "go native"?

OP
Perhaps an MBA will clear all obstacles, however, I have found that a TESOL is quite useful. Whether or not that is because my other qualifications do not impress, I can't say. It has definitely been useful for me.

The Cambridge CELTA has way too much info for use in China. Most of what is useful could be taught in a few days rather than a month. The CELTA is also expensive but useful in other countries. In China, it's unknown, at least in some places.

The ideal would be a program that incorporates the most useful elements of CELTA in a 5 - 7 day training program.

After 5 years, I feel that I am getting comfortable in the classroom, even though some real language specialists disapprove of my methods.

There is a huge amount of money to be made in China, if you can negotiate the Byzantine guanxi [corruption] system that exists.

My guess is that you might do better utilizing your business expertise rather than English teaching. English teaching is a good place to start.
You might find a good job in the business department of a top end university teaching business English.

One question I have asked that I have not gotten an answer for yet...how do you go about getting directly to the universities and colleges, public schools, etc? All I have seen so far is recruiter ads and private school ads.

You're asking the wrog people. ost of the posters here are located far fro Chegdu and those of us that are in the "know" would prefer to keep our contacts to ourselves. Now you stated you have a fiancee in Chengdu so you should be asking her to do the legwork prior to your arrival. Ask her to pop down to the SAFEA office and gather a list of schools that are permited to hire foreigners. From there she can use the internet (in Chinese) to find contact information for each school.

Normally I advise people never to come over as a tourist first, but in your situation, I would get an L visa and stay here for a few months while at the same time doing face to face interviews with schools. Another point to note is that most places will not be hiring until July/August, those that are are probably not the best places to work.
