ground beef?
@990/kg for very lean Australian beef from the Brasilian import shop.

boneless chicken thighs?Smile
as above

tomatoes?
totally seasonal and with such a variety of prices as to make it pointless. Put it this way, in summer my tinned tomatoes go rusty while I make gaspatcho, salsa, and pasta sauce. Come winter I go without.

rice?
I pay 340/kg for locally grown brown rice that I have half-polished for free.

1 qt (liter) of milk?
I don't drink much milk so I only pay @160yen

I keep hearing people say that the cost of living in Japan is expensive - I am trying to quantify the cost.

It does sound like a good idea but aside from the fact the "you spend the yen your making" your diet will most likely alter quite significantly in order to accomodate the realities of your shopping basket here. People who say that Japan is expensive are invariably trying to eat food they are used to back home.

Not quite with you on that. I eat some of the same food here as back in the States, and almost of it is more exepensive here;, ie. milk, chicken, beef, sugar, vegetables, fruit, coffee, etc..

The only thing that is usually cheaper is tofu. None ofthe food I usually buy here is unusual in Japan, just more expensive.

The beauty of Japan is that you can practically eat out for cheaper than you can eat in. There are dozens of backstreet teishoku (dinner set) restaurants where you'll pay 500 - 900 for a big feed of healthy food. Even most of the chain restaurants do cheap sets, but obviously it depends what you like. There's a curry place I go to which is 850y for all-you-can-eat at lunch time, but most of my friends hate it!
