Does anyone know which institution offered accredited degrees that are recognized throughout most of the world?

I am currently considering U of Phoenix in Aizona for an MA in Ed. Also would an MA in Linguistics or TESL/TESOL be better?

Regards.
Matt

ps. This will keep me occupied in Saudi while I'm at home.

If you plan to stay in EFL/ESL, do it in that field. Many places don't even accept an education MA.

As to the University of Phoenix... that is the place that actually has nothing to do with Phoenix or Arizona (in fact... the people of Phoenix were appalled and disgusted when this place bought the right to put its name on the stadium). I would take care that degrees from this place - which seems to have no actual campus but holds some classes in office buildings and rented quarters around the country - be accepted overseas.

I was surprised that they would even offer an MA related to EFL/ESL, so I just looked at their program. It is the strangest collection of courses that I have seen. I only saw one course that matched what was in my MA TEFL.

I'd keep looking...

I have studied the US higher education system formally and thoroughly and I concur strongly with VS' comments about the for-profit U of Phoenix...or any of the other for-profit institutions for that matter. Those types of comments about Phoenix's graduate degrees seem across the board. A Columbia business professor termed Phoenix's business master's as "MBA Lite."

Tastes great! Less filling!

Have you looked into the University of Massachusetts? They have a good program in Applied Linguistics. It's also offered on-campus.

thanks for that a_ibrahim,

I'll do that although the on-line degree is really what I'm after.

I meant to mention that an online program is offered. I mentioned that they have an on-campus program because this makes it different from U of Phoenix. Grand Canyon University has 1 in TESOL on-campus or online.

Matt...

Do a google... there must be many US universities that offer online degrees that conform closely to their on-campus programs.

There are also British and Australian universities that offer good online programs that may be cheaper.

What you want to find is actual US universities that also offer on-line programs, not 'online universities'.

When I finished my MS from North Carolina State University in 2002, there weren't many US universities offering full degree programs online (many offered individual courses and certificate programs), however, in the past few years, the number of US universities offering full degree programs (bachelor's and master's) has ballooned.

In such universities, the online programs are identical in content and assessment to the corresponding on-campus programs. Moreover, no mention is made on the degree certificate of the program being online or on-campus.

Google is your friend.

Hey Mattthew156...

I just finished up a distance Masters of Applied Linguistics at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. The program is well-respected, less expensive than others and gave me a very good foundation. The uni's homepage is www.usq.edu.au and you can pm me if you have any questions.
