I know there is no way Id make a living off it but anyone know if there are opportunities for a foreigner (American) to coach basketball in China. I know theyve gone nuts over it since Yao Ming. I played ball in college in the US. Just wondering if it was possible to make a little side money as well as for the fun of it coaching in china.

I've been in China nearly four years and have never heard of any opportunities although I have heard of opportunities for fitness instructors.

The top team in China professional basketball has a foreign coach. I coached the woman's team at my university two years ago and coached in Taiwan 15 years ago. Basketball is the game of choice in China and if you know your nuts and bolts they will give you work.

Thanks, I was kind of figuring there should be some opportunities. Do most Universities have teams? Just wondering about the organization there. Probably not up for coaching a pro team but university, or a club team would be fun.

According to Michel Jordan and others who have come here from the NBA is that Chinese play more basketball than americans. Every school has hundred of courts to play on. I am not sure of the university programs but there are many games on the TV. Get someone to put a CV in Chinese for you and mail them out. You could probably swing a deal where you teach a few hours of English and coach a few hours.

There are several sport companies that hire those (FTs) with proper "sport" degrees..not sure what kind of degree ths is.. but they often can be seen at private schools and the better Chinese schools running the sports programs....well paid I have heard from one of the teachers, they usually come to the school ..do their thing and then go on to the next school...in the case where they coach a team, they have a contract with the school for just that...sorry that I cannot remember the companies name...

I know that a lot of foreigners are hired to teach Yoga. I know this is a bit off topic but it is still related to sports.

In order to coach effectively, you might need to communicate effectively. Can you do that?
