Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice on China. I just finished teaching kindy for a year in South Korea, I'm looking to make the change to China.

What schools should I stay away from? What ones should I consider? I'm going to move to Shenzhen as I have some friends there. I'm also considering taking a housing allowance and getting my own place but I'm not sure about housing costs there, is this wise? Thanks in advance for any help and if there is anything else important I missed feel free to add.

NOt an expert, but if you're looking for less hours and good pay, try unis. HOusing allowances probably aren't the best idea. Housing here is very good and spacious compared to Korea. Plus I htink you need a special permit if you live in another apt.

I also recommend teaching at a university. I live on campus. The school doesn't offer much of an allowance for off-campus housing but you can still survive. I have friends who do this.

The special permit bit is not true anymore and it hasn't been for at least several years. Generally speaking you can live where you want; sometimes the institution will give you an off-campus allowance, sometimes not.

They may give you the special permit speech but it is not true and just a control factor. I live off-campus in a truly beautiful gated-community with an apartment equal-to-or-better than anything I had at home. It's just how you strike the deal.

You are entitled to live anywhere you want, but schools are not required to provide a housing allowance should you refuse their facilities. You ARE required however to provide the police (PSB) your actual living address.

The reason I want to find my own place is, last year, the school that hired me in Korea gave me false info about the apartment and it end up being very small and not in the best shape. I don't want to be in that situation again, so would prefer to find my own accommodations. I will def. look into what I need to do that though. Thanks everyone.

Well, I've heard conflicting reports about Marong, but I'll prob end up looking into it. I'm not having much luck finding places that are hiring in SZ right now.
