Hi everyone,
I'm an Education student in Edmonton, Canada (not finished my degree til 2010). I'm interested in teaching ESL from May to August only - preferably in south east Asia. I have taught ESL locally on a volunteer basis, and have TESOL certification.
Are short term positions like this attainable? I'm not expecting to make much money beyond hopefully covering my flight and basic cost of living. It's a must for me that everything is done legally, not under the table.
Thanks for your input,
Dan |

Have you even checked what the average monthly salaries are in South East Asia? You would earn at most $1000US a month but more like $500 a month. I am not sure how you are expecting to cover your flight. |

I've heard of camps in Korea, Taiwan and China. They cover your flight, and give you a bit of pocket money. Won't make much, but it'll be an experience.
Start looking here at eslcafe.com and tefl.com and search for "camp" |

Yes, I have an idea of the salaries, and even a low end of $500/month over 4 months, that would more than cover a return flight from Western Canada. I am not looking at this as a get rich venture. |

The problem is that unless I have read something incorrectly you don't have a degree. Thus you will not be able to get legal work in any country. The reason that is a problem is that you will have a hard time securing a visa that will let you stay in the country for four months.
With a B.A degree you could get a four month contract with Aston in China or a company in Vietnam.
You can probably find a two month camp to work at. For two months one can enter a country on a tourist visa and work illegally.(P.S. I am not recommending working illegally. I am just stating some common practices of some short term jobs like ALV in Taiwan an Helen Consultants out of Hangzhou). |
