|
|
Hi, I'm new and just beginning to entertain the idea of going to Mexico to teach English. I don't have any training yet and if I decide to proceed will definitely pursue some education of my own first. My fiance lives in Mexico near Queretaro and it's possible he won't be able to return to the US for awhile so I am trying to prepare for the worst. Is teaching English the best option for a job for an American woman in Mexico? Also, when would be the best time of year to find openings there? I am still planning far in advance, so any advice would be helpful. Thanks! |

The major hiring periods are Dec/Jan and July/August (especially in unis and high schools) as the semester starts then but you can find work in language schools all year round. Queretaro is a nice city, if a little expensive to live in and there are plenty of schools. |

Thanks for the info. Dec/Jan actually would work out best for me, but we'll just wait to see what happens. My fiance has a house about 15 miles outside of Queretaro, so I'd have no living expenses. |

Company classes - not necessarily "Business English", but just general English classes at companies - are big in Mexico, and those are going all year round. The big language school chains stay open all year too. Actual high schools and elementary schools obviously close for summer. All in all, Mexico isn't as 'seasonal' as some countries when it comes to finding teaching work. |

This is really good to know, I'm also in the same situation, I can't afford to get work in Spain or other spanish speaking countries as the only hiring period is seemingly september, and I won't have enough money by then, so if I did a Celta in nov/dec or feb/march (more likely february/march) I'd still be able to find work easily? |

By all means go to Mexico if you'd like, but I'd just put a word in for those other Spanish-speaking countries---in many of the South American capitals, the language institutes hire year round, and there are two waves of hiring for the schools, the main one being for Feb/Mar starts |

Just a heads up...It seems the current economic situation in other countries is catching up to us here in Mexico. Well established teachers are finding themselves scrambling for more hours because of budget cutbacks. Some are even leaving Mexico because they can't make ends meet any longer. New arrivals should plan to have enough money to cover expenses while getting established, something that may take quite a bit longer in this current economy. |
