I am interested in teaching/tutoring in Taiwan this summer, and I would like to know where I should begin my job search, or if it is even feasible.

My background is that I just recently graduated from a university, and am currently in my first year of teaching at an inner-city school. For the summer, I would love to visit Taiwan and earn some money at the same time doing something I love.

I am American-born Taiwanese. I have an economics degree with a background in business. My Mandarin is shaky but better than most non-native speakers (although I do have an accent with Mandarin).

What should I be doing to look for a summer job?

If you want to visit Taiwan, I suggest just visiting Taiwan.

Buying summer airfare to fly here, work illegally, not get to see much because you were working the entire time, get screwed on your pay because you were working illegally, realizing that Taiwanese English camps aren't really about teaching, and then going home to a considerable tough job sounds like it just isn't worth it.

I have found that China has more opportunities for summer jobs rather than Taiwan.

Why is it illegal?

Because you wont have a work permit, resident visa, or pay taxes. Essentially you will be an "illegal immigrant".

The OP may have a Taiwanese passport. He or she is Taiwanese-American. Then it would not be illegal for him or her. There are only about three camps in Taiwan. You can get an easy job for the summer in China. Look into the program sponsored by Hangzhou University's John Zhou. You only work three or four hours a day. You can spend the rest of the time looking around. They are even suppose to give you a local tour. I worked there for a month in 2004.

linzbc - Is it legal to just get off a plane in the US and start work if you don't have any papers? Why would it be any different in Taiwan?

Ture, if OP has a Taiwanese passport, then no legal issues. However, just because someone has Taiwanese heritage, doesn't mean they have a Taiwanese passport. If so, then great, no worries.

timmyjames1976,

Why do you think I wrote, may have a Taiwanese passport? There is a clear reason why I wrote may.

I used to have a Taiwanese passport, as I was born in Taiwan. However, I now have a US Passport as I became a naturalized US Citizen. Does this help my situation much?

Maybe you could get a Taiwanese passport again. Then you could work legally in Taiwan.
