No, I live in Italy. Actually, Italians sometimes use that word you mentioned. I explain that it is a slur and therefore they will offend many people by using it, including myself.

I understand that using the Lord's name in vain could offend someone, but for me it is quite different from a slur. If I called you a Christian pig or something similar, I could understand you sending me to the principal.

My point was that here, in a lay country that is in any case predominantly Catholic, people say, loosely translated, "Madonna pig", "Christ," "Buddah's sh*t", "Pig Judas" and many other things similar and they seem to be quite calm about it.

In Brazilian Portuguese, the word for bread is po. It's easy to mispronounce this word when you're new to the language, and say pau (wood) which is a slang term for I-think-you-can-guess-what. I was grateful that people explained this. It's not like I went around shouting it out and giggling, but I was grateful I had the knowledge, and it was an effective motivation technique, since I really worked on my nasalization after that. Smile

Personally, I just think there are so many cool, hilarious idiomatic expressions in English that it's a shame not to waste your "fun time" on them.

If my students said something that could easily be misinterpreted, I will help them. So far the only problem word has been Bu Shi , which, among other things, can be not I (I'm not) etc. Sounds a lot like the BS word.

I'm afraid the worst thing I have ever taught (and I did it because I had no lesson plan) wa how to say throw up (technicolor yawn, praying to the porcelain goddess, etc.)

For a class going overseas, I will teach 101 ways to say the bathroom
