|
|
I have a B.S. in Secondary English Education and 7 years experience teaching in the States. I have worked quite a bit with English language learners. I am looking into teaching English abroad (I'd like to eventually teach in Europe, South America, and Asia) and can't figure out if it is worth my time/money to get the TEFL or CELTA certifications. Is it worth the resume enhancement? On another note, is getting a job in Europe even feasible? I am fluent in German and I have a basic working knowledge of French, Spanish, and some Hungarian. But, with the EU restrictions, I wonder if any of that matters?
Any advice? |

I am a certified English teacher too, look into "real" International Schools not just TEFL. You only need your teaching cert. no CELTA/TESOL:
I got this link for Naturegirl:
www.tes.co.uk
I think there are 200+ English jobs in Europe posted here.
I got this link from Chancellor:
www.ibo.org
IBO is an international program
Umm, just one thing...please disregard the IBO job at the Montessori in St. Thomas.
That one is mine.
Good luck. |

Do you want to teach English as a foreign language (like someone teaching Spanish in American schools) or do you want to teach what you're teaching now in the states? If the former, perhaps instead of getting a CELTA or other TEFL certification you should consider going on to get your masters degree either in TESOL or in applied linguistics and get a state ESL teaching certification. That way, should you decide to return to the states and still want to teach English to speakers of other languages you'd already have the requisite degree (though there are actually a few schools that offer bachelor's degrees in TESL).
If, on the other hand, you want to teach what you're teaching now, others have posted links to various international schools or international school organizations (which have member schools in various countries). Oh, and don't overlook Department of Defense schools (for children of military personnel stationed overseas). |

No.
Many of these TEFL certifications are nothing more than snake-oil for educators.
Beware.
By the way, the Cambridge site now calls the CELTA a "teaching award" rather than a certification. Many of the centers, which Cambridge admits they don't have full control of, still say "certification", probably because that sells more. |
