Hi there. I recently finished my 20hour tefl course and i am currently in the last 2months of a 4year honourary degree in English Literature.
I have my heart set on travelling to South America, and have recently secured work at a hostel in Santiago, Chile, which was recommended to me by a friend. I hope that when I arrive I can apply to as many places as possible and will hopefully secure work when I get there. I will arrive in July, and will stay there for 2-3months.
I would like to know how possible this it to secure work teaching? Is there a lot of work with my qualifications?
I also speak very little Spanish...will that be a great hinderance???
Any information (experiences) would be really welcome.
Thanks,
ANDY |

I'll let someone else with a better idea tackle some of the other questions but I think your biggest problem might actually be that you're only going to be here 2-3 months. If you're looking for a really organized job like at an institute or something I would think they'd be hesitant to hire someone who is only staying for a couple months. Even private students would have to start classes with you knowing they'd only get about a dozen classes in before they have to find a new teacher again. Though, hopefully that wont always be a problem and you can get around it |

2-3 months is not long enough to work with an institute - it will take a few weeks to get hired, and classes typically run for 20 weeks or so. Both institutes and students demand continuity with their teachers. As such, you will have difficulty finding a job with an institute.
Assuming that you will be working legally for the Hostel (ie you will have a RUT number) you could find some private clients by personal networking or advertising. Private lessons require lots of planning and materials, but pay better than institutes do. This is probably your best shot finding English teaching work for such a short stay.
Good luck! |

It is unwise to use your email as your user name on any internet board including this one. |

First thing I want to know is, what an 'honourary' degree. Are you having this bestowed on you for your services to rock music??
I agree with what people have said here. You won't get any work here if you say you're here for such a short time.
Don't worry about your lack of Spanish. The locals have trouble with that too!!!!
Also, if that really is your email address, you are a first class tool!!!! |

Sharkeyv,
Congratulations! You have made it to the internet. (also called the "world wide web")
Let me introduce you to a little website by the name of Wikipedia. I know you have never heard of it before because this is your first time on the web:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorary_degree
Enjoy. |

Oh, Johnson....how embarrassing for you. You really are living up to your name.
1. You quote Wikipedia. It is written, therefore it is. (Are you a fan of The Office?)
2. I don't think you even read the Wikipedia entry which suggests such a degree requires no academic effort.
3. You totally missed my point. Andrew obviously made a mistake and I was ribbing him. His mistake was also very ironic seeing as his degree was in English.
You really are a Johnson, aren't you? |

Sharkeyv,
1. First, I didn't quote; I offered a link.
2. I don't have to read the article, I know the definition of an Honorary degree.(I love "The Office"; the US version)
3. You had a point?
So the best comeback you have is a joke about my name?
What a shallow and "small" man.
Sincerely,
The Big Johnson |
