Thanks everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it. I decided to quit, I was on a plane this morning back to the USA, and I am now sitting at home with loved ones and my cat. If some of you were trying to make me nervous, to open up the job market, I really think you stink, but for the rest of you who gave me your honest, sincere advice, which I think is most, if not all of you, thank you, thank you, thank you. I feel safe and sound and that is most important.

PS. Japan is a beautiful country, I plan to be back someday - under a nicer set of circumstances. |

You don't necessarily need to send the original diploma. I only needed to send a copy along with either an original set of transcripts or an original signed letter saying that I had graduated.
And as to having to part with your passport... once again they only needed a copy of the info page. The only time I was parted from my passport was when I took it along with my COE to the embassy to process my visa (which we are required to do in person), which was 3 days.
And to Megan... I don't think anyone here was trying to unnecessarily scare you in order to open the job market or otherwise. If you looked up the penalties yourself for working illegally, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have even stepped foot through that school's doors. I sure as well wouldn't have knowing that in most eastern asian countries I stick out like a sore thumb and if I stick around any area for too long, am very likely to get asked for papers at some point. Hell... I've already been approached by the police in Japan 3 times since March 23rd (granted that only one set of police actually questioned me and looked at my passport, the other two just handed back my passport without even openning it when I said I was from the UK. Probably assumed I was just a tourist.) |

I think such circumstances will depend alot on you. After all, you made the choice to place yourself in these circumstances to begin with.
Perhaps if you do plan to ever return, you'll be a little bit wiser for the wear. |

Because of the situation and how uncomfortable I am with everything surrounding it, I would rather not.... just ask a lot of questions, have time to prepare, don't ever take anything on the spot like I did,,,, with 10 days to be there, and have your work permit in hand from day 1. And, this is to the newbies, not to all of you who gave me so much good infromation. Thank you again.

You've misunderstood: the illegalities are obvious and had already been covered in some depth. I didn't feel any need to add my 2 yen.
I was thinking of the thread as a whole and then dividing each of the complaints up and considering them on their individual merit. With all of Meagan's complaints and then the actual details she posted *I* wasn't really seeing much of any concern *outside of the obvious illegal parts*. Beyond those components, the contract merely sucked in total, but it was hardly unusual. |

If the name of the school or other information were not already public knowledge on the board, then I could see your point. Startteacher's point concerning letting others know what happened and what school seems a valid reason for reference to help others. |

I was unaware that another thread had the name of the school.
This thread is only under a week old an the OP has already left. So for anyone new to this forum it can be quite a misleading thread. THough she mentioned the name of the school before and not here this time is all but a minor issue.
Because, the victim here is Meagan0813 and I wish her well on the next step of her new journey, and sincerely hope she succeeds against all battles whether internally or externally. I am glad she has taken the positive decision and removed all the negativies surrounding her bad experience, so she can go on and give her services at a better place. |

| Sorry bearcat, you misconstrued my meaning. I think it is a good idea to post such info, but the site owners sometimes don't like it, i.e. info on 'bad' schools. |
