I wrote this a while back and am just cutting and pasting;
If someone is wanting do this seriously, the first stop should be LANCELOT School as it has a certificate equivalent to the DELTA for the online world, which teaches three aspects which is crucial for live online teaching: (similar to the DELTA as opposed to CELTA as you must be TEFL/TESL certified and have experience) www.lancelotschool.com
1)methodology specifically targeted to live online teaching
2)intercultural communicative competence
3)technology (and how to help your students with the technology)
In adddition, the LANCELOT certificate is ICC certified and if you want, you can get nine credit hours. LANCELOT School also has a recruitment center where language schools and companies can request certified live online trainers.
During the last two years and especially the last six months I have come across many, many portals for language teachers. Here is a list in alphabetical order that I posted on another forum of the portals I have come across. (commentary on some of the portals I have signed up with)
Avilano
http://www.avilano.com/
Buddy School
http://www.buddyschool.com/
This school offers training in anything...
ChooseI
http://www.choosei.com/tutoring.aspx
Not just language, but any kind of tutoring
Edufire
http://edufire.com/
Wonderful virtual classroom (VC). They also do a great induction...
English Everywhere
http://www.englisheverywhere.com/howitworksd.html
English Bee (formerly Culture Link Online)
http://www.english-bee.com/eb-teacher/33-home.php
I was on the portal for about a year before I got students. The students I have had have been very good about showing up. No VC and the training is through Skype or MSN.
Find A Tutor
http://www.findatutor.co.nz/
Have had several inquiries from students although most have wanted face-to-face. This is not just a language site...f2f tutoring in all subjects as well.
Find My Favorite Teacher
http://www.findmyfavouriteteacher.com/
Find Your Teachers
http://www.findyourteachers.com/
ForteMall
http://www.fortemall.com/
I have an account with them, but as yet haven't figured out the system. If someone else has, please comment.
Learnissimo
http://www.learnissimo.com/index.php/EN/english-french-spanish-lessons
They require everyone to have a video and preview the video. They have a great archive and a very basic VC. You are not on the portal if you do not show available times, which is quite nice.
Lingueo
http://www.lingueo.com/default/index
Linkua
http://www.linkua.com/
Myngle
http://www.myngle.com/
The community of teachers are very excited about Myngle and they have a very active community. They have a new VC, which is quite nice compared to what they started with. Myngle's strength is their advertising and public relations. If you sign up for them, be sure to get a free consultation as it is imperative to be successful on this site.
Spoken Skills
http://www.spokenskills.com/
Teacher James
http://www.teacherjames.com/
I see this site as the site with a lot of potential. The VC is quite good and their is potential to make some money through their 'study hall' course. It does appear, however, that they have more teachers signed up than students although it may be changing.
TuteU
