Are there any Chinese nationals working in Dhahran/ Al Kobar/KFUPM.
My son is coming up seven and speaks fluent Mandarin(Putonghua) as well as Indonesian with English as his first language. We are worried that he will lose his Chinese and wonder if it would be possible to make contact with Chinese native speakers or even to hire Chinese teachers.
Thank You. Mr K Smile

Hi, Kipling:

If I get the offer, let's your son and daughter play together so that he can practice Chinese and can learn English.

Chinese are everywhere, but it will be hard to find a family within close distance AND who is willing to meet regularly to help your son practice.

One option is to get a satellite channel bundle that includes a Chinese news channel (or any Chinese channel).

Good luck!

Correction: he (your son) can practice Chinese and she (my daughter) can learn English (she speaks little English).

Thanks Mr T but CCTV 9 is the usual Intenational channel .... news....boring for kids unless I can get CCTV 12/14 which is the kids channel and my nippers favourite. Also I would bring all his Chinese favourites anyway on computer, such as ultraman, Chinese, cartoons and shows and even English speaking shows with a Chinese language options as he switches between languages at his fancy(Gosh wish we had students like that Very Happy Very Happy on second thoughts we would be out of a job Sad Sad Sad )
Ke Yi ,Well corrected Mr H lets hope we both get settled
with the job and meet up for a good Sichuan Hotpot and some good old northern Shandong dumplings.
The shift from China to the KSA for my son in the one issue that may influence our final decision about the KSA but more about that in another post.
Thankyou and may your Gods bless you.
Mr K

As Gaius says on the later episodes of Battlestar Galactica," there is only one God, Gods damn it" I would be careful of your choice of plurals in Saudia, or they will send you frackin packin.

My wife is a charming and beautiful business executive. Unlike Scot's types of Chinese who deign to associate with him. Let's not perpetuate Chinese female stereotypes here.

It takes all sorts of people to make the world go round. I just thought I would mention that the only Chinese nationals I have seen in this part of the world are the "sex workers" in Bahrain.

Only a fool would think that meant I believe all Chinese are in that line of business.

I totally agree with Uncle Scotty. Only a fool would think that all Chinese women are charming and beautiful business executives! Laughing

There are quite a few Chinese nurses working in the Dammam/Dhahran/Al Khobar area. I've also seen male Chinese workers around the area, but working mostly as laborers.

I think that you are likely to run into a number of Chinese wives on the compounds here. Western men living in the EP tend to have Asian wives, and they seem to very quickly establish connections all over town. I had a colleague living down the street from me last year who was married to a Chinese woman, and within a month after arriving she had set up an enviable social network.

Many Thanks Tante MX Smile The old finger wagger is Asian too and quite a good social networker. I have had some promising info that will help my son keep up with his Chinese.
