Is medical insurance usually provided by the employer, or does the employee have to pay for this themselves? If so, how much is this likely to be? I cant find much about it on here.

Most schools will not provide medical insurance.

Perhaps they may agree to pay up to 1000 rmb per year towards certain medical needs, if you're lucky.

That has been my experience.

Check out the following thread from the Thailand Forum: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=70015 . In particular, take note of Lensman's suggestion of obtaining a "platinum" credit card. Although he was referring to a particular credit card issued by an Australian bank, it is possible that US/UK/Canadian banks might also provide similar health insurance benefits to holders of their top-range credit cards - it'll be worth checking out.

Also, I believe that YHA (Youth Hostels Association) have arrangements with some insurance companies in which members are entitled to discounts ( 10% ? 15% ?). Maybe, there could be other organisations (eg trade unions, professional associations, etc) that also provide similar benefits for their members.
