Speaking of Nightlife in Qatar
Let's try, try again...in the words of our Prophet Ben Franklin, to define it.
I personally find Doha to be a bit trying...but, not in any way, as trying, or should I say- horrifying- as life in Good Ol' KSA.

I've visited Qatar a couple of times in the last few years. It seems a pretty staid place, not too much going on compared to the UAE. It is more for families, singles really have a hard time of it. The single scene seems to be limited to hotel bars and clubs. Not much in the way of outdoor sports. I was shocked to find out that there is no public beach in Doha. Dubai has Jumeirah Beach which is fantastic. AD has a huge public beach on the Corniche, even Sharjah has a decent public beach. There's nothing in Doha. If you want to go to a beach, you need a 4X4 and have to go out of town. The whole coast is devoted to development.
The beach scene in the UAE is amazing, so for me this place was a drag. |

Having been in Doha for a long time, single - married - single again, I have to say things are picking up on a certain level. There's certainly a lot more to do than there used to be. One really depressing thing is the probable closure of the Rugby Club - a home away from home for many of the Gulagers. What will we do without it? There are appeals to the government but so far nothing. The landlady wants the land to build more compounds to make more money. Too many of the good old places are going or have gone. We Gulagers used to hang around a great little hotel, the Oasis, which has disappeared. The Sailing Club is being taken over too. So all that will be left will be the night clubs and hotel bars. It's really too bad that these good places are gone or soon to be demolished.
Too much development is not such a good thing if the places that make a city interesting disappear. The artificial places are not so awful, but they are fake. Nothing like the real thing. We need more people to help support the Rugby Club - a venerable institution if ever there was one. |

'Merican much? You give too much away, Bub. Not 'nuf 'postrophies 'n the use of "ta" when it shoulda been "da". Nice try, tho...dumb Yanks and all that rot, eh? Here's a hint...instead of tryin' to mimic an 'Merican like a parrot tries to mimic a human voice, try not to be such a "bird brain" next time 'n give it a little (sorry, no glottal stop for me, mate) thought...or is that asking too much.

Language Lesson of the Day:
Current Vernacular:
ta = to
da = the
G-dropping minus the apostrophe is currently in vogue in some circles, especially among teens. G-dropping minus the apostrophe is an idiosyncratic form like using only small letters or writing 'good nite'. I've never seen an aposrophe in a text message. Look how the apostrophe is abused - how many times have you seen this? its'. Some people would even argue that it should accepted as standard. I wouldn't but some would.
Check youtube and some pop lyrics. G-dropping minus the apostrophe is not that unusual and pretty common in rap. |

The social scene is getting worse, what with the Garvwy Bros getting into trouble with the law and the place going dry. I sure hope they get their permit back. It's one of the places I go. lots of servicemen there at the weekends. I reckon they'll have to stay on base now.
See what's happened in today's Gulf Times:
Club owners try to resolve licence row. |

Isn't your moniker ungrammatical?
Shouldn't it read "Never Cease to be amazed"?
why have you got two past participles? With the adverb 'never', you shouldn't use 'ceased'. I presume you want to refer to your present state of amazement and not something in the past? Just asking. You must hve your reasons. |

Stay at home and watch DVDs. In season go to all the tennis and squash matches, the tickets are cheap. You can take a flask and keep yourself warm. Take a blanket, too. |

Garvey's still having problems. No eats or drinks. When are they going to get this licence business fixed? We poor Gulagers are running out of places to hang out. Our salaries don't permit too much splurging so the Rugby Club and Garvey's is all we have. Rydges was just around the corner, could walk there on a nice evening but now that's closed too. Where do all the Ozzies go now? The Qube is only for splurges. The Sheraton Irish Pub is pricey. Don't want to end up in Starbucks! Yuck! |

Garveys still out. It looks like the end of an era.
The Irish pub at the Sheraton is OK but pricey!!!
Rugby Club being more restrictive - need to keep the riff raff out. I don't blame them. |

Too bad about Garvey's. I used to hang out there sometimes. Nice bar with all the marines. |

Yes it's really too bad. Looks like the Garvey bros are going to go out of business if they don't get permission to sell moonshine. The pool and gym are still operating but it's not like before, no eats, treats, etc. The boys in blue must miss the place. I used to shoot the breeze with them, nice young fellers.
The Sailing Club has been given a reprieve for a year or two but it's not the same. |
