Hello, everyone...

New to the board, and I'm in the middle of applying to Westgate thinking a few months would be a good trial period for Japan. Has anyone ever renewed with them? If so, can you stay in the housing Westgate set up, or do you have to move out and then move back in once your next contract starts?

Thanks for the advice!

Hi there,
Westgate is a popular topic on this forum! Your best bet is to type in "Westgate" in the search tool above.

To get you started this link is one of the most recent:

I keep seeing advertisements here at Dave's for those short-term stints at Westgate. Obviously they aren't the best way to go. However, right now "good" or "fair" may be the best we can do.

The short answer is no, you have to move out of Westgate housing at the completion of your contract. I am in my second contract now with Westgate, everything with them is great but you have to embrace the idea that it is a short-term contract and nothing more.

It would be easy enough to find housing (guesthouse, short-term rental) to see you through to the start of the next Westgate contact however; it seems to me if your goal is to stay and teach in Japan on a longer term basis you should seek a longer term contract while completing your first short term contract with Westgate. It is just too expensive to wait around paying living expences in between Westgate contracts otherwise.

From board member zorro (5!) in a previous thread:

the difference between the accredited and the extracurricular is that you won't just be teaching conversational English. You may also have to do some TOEFL/TOEIC prep courses, along with presentations, writing and reading. You may also have to test students at the end of the course, along with ongoing assessment. It's a bit more like teaching General English IMO. I did this a few years ago now, so things may have changed.

Also, the class length times are different (or may be). Instead of the 40 min class that's repeated between 5-7 times a day, you'll probably be expected to teach 90 minute classes 2-3 times a day. Again, this was my experience in 2006
